1. Because I bought the matching HVAC unit from Amanda on here (misano red RS6) who had them previously and I think that prior to that IT or David had it on a specific car and stated that it was the only matching unit he'd ever seen

2. Because I always planned to upgrade to an RNS-e one day so my OCD told me to buy the matching unit

3. No still not done that yet because at the time Sergey and a guy from Norway or Sweden were trying to decipher the coding to get the DIS to work correctly which would have again pleased my OCD!

How did you go about altering the taper so it matches the center console? I reckon sanding it down is the most accurate and least destructive way of doing it?

So what’s the status with this? From reading the thread it appears it doesn’t work at all for the turn directions on the centre section. Am I correct? I’m fairly sure it should be fixable....

An RNS-E almost works in an 8N TT, for which it was never designed. The MK1 TT only had an even earlier Nav system from the factory, a BNS3.0 or 4.0

Here’s the before and after video of the firmware fix I did to make RNS-E work for that platform....
https://youtu.be/WAzD-N909Mo

So someone may want to get in touch?
I would suggest a PM is best. Or contact me as user pcbbc over at the ttforum.co.uk (although I have subscribed to this thread, so hopefully I will see any replies).

Its been talked about for a good decade or so now.... The problem is that it isn't easy, and the solution is in far less demand than it was back then making a solution less likely to ever be engineered.

The issue, as far as I'm aware is that the DIS in the D2 is an odd resolution. Its full colour, and a different size, relative to all the other cars like the A3/A4/A6/TT that the RNS-E made its way into. If it were monochrome I think there is a better chance the RNS-E would be able to negotiate a screen rez and display turn by turn on a D2 cluster.

The RNS-E does successfully transmit text data for Radio/CD/MP3 into the top line, so its not like a bad coding config or mismatched canbus signal.

Short of playing man in the middle with the display data and morphing it on the fly onto the screen available, from the screen data presented, i'm not sure how it could be overcome, but if you achieve it it would be very impressive to see.

Okay, thanks for the details. You’re right that probably makes it difficult, but not impossible.

Has anyone documented the protocol for the D2 colour DIS anywhere?
I’ve made a start on the monochrome DIS protocol here...

I don’t have a A8 to be playing with, so can’t investigate myself. Not sure I’m up for getting an A8 cluster and trying to build a test harness unless I know more about what’s involved.

The RNSE firmware has code for communicating with two kombi (cluster) types:
One is called “mono” (fairly obviously monochrome I would assume) in the debug messages. This is the one I’m used to in the 8N/8J TTs.
The other is named “hicol” (maybe hires colour?) and I’ve no idea which model that was used on, or even perhaps NOT used on, but perhaps intended for... any clues?

I realise this is a niche market now, but that’s not the point for me. I’m interested in fixing things, but to do that I’m probably going to need help from someone on the A8 D2 side. I can bring all the necessary RNSE patching experience. I’ve stamped on a huge number of bugs and niggles in the RNSE firmware already, plus a few enhancements along the way.

I can lend you an A8 cluster and wiring to play with if that would help? I am going to be fitting a mk2 RNS-e in to an S8 in the next few months so if you can get the DIS working that would be some very nice icing on the cake

'Hicol' is very likely the colour screen as it was called 'nav high' or 'highline' in some models. I have a B7 with it, and I'm sure that term or something similar appeared in the spec sheet.

More than that for me, and maybe others too?
I thought of putting an RNS-E in ages ago but the lack of the DIS display put me off enough to not bother.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

That’s very generous and I can see it would be potentially useful. But I’d also need to find the D2 display protocol (for the turn directions display), or have something that can display them (RNSD) and then sniff the CAN and reverse engineer them.

Ok, thanks. So distinctly different again from the D2? Or is it possibly the same protocol but just broken in some way?
Its always useful to see these things. Would you be able to Google or take some pictures by any chance?

RNS-ds make pretty good door stops in the workshop so I can send you one of those as well I've never actually used the nav in one tbh so have never seen the legendary DIS directions in action.

I think the B7 display is higher resolution than the D2. Its a parts car so a bit buried at the moment but I'll see if I can get some juice to it, or find a pic on google
