Default Rear wheel bearing replacement

One of my rear wheel bearings is whining away to itself at speed, I've had several quotes to have it replaced but they vary wildly with each other. Both quote the same price for the bearing itself, so I assume they are being purchased from the same source but how much workshop time would you expect.

I get what I think is rear bearing noise, especially off throttle about 70mph. Love to know what symptoms you have had and what you have been quoted.

Elsawin suggests 290 mins of labour for 2 bearings removed and re-installed on a quattro

Initially the whine only happened on a trailing throttle or deceleration, so as it was from behind it was initially put down to the differential. Now 99% of the time I am the only one in the car, and I always drive it so its difficult to locate that kind of sound.

I had a chance to sit in the back of the car with my sister driving, so she drove it from Bury St. Edmunds to Cambridge along the A14 with me sitting in the back, ears listening to the sound and it was coming from the rear nearside wheel. The sound is actually present at all speeds, its just that at lower speeds you cannot hear it up front.

I did hope back when I had the tyres changed the problem might go as the old tyres were badly worn, but nope still did it with new tyres.

There is no play in the bearing, it just whines away to itself.

Cheapest quote so far is from an independent Audi specialist in London which has done some work for me in the past on this car, and thats coming in at £117 for the bearing (genuine Audi part) and £108 labour inc. VAT

Most expensive so far from a Dorset indy is £98 for the genuine Audi part and £167 for labour, both plus VAT.

Still waiting for another local workshop with an ex. Audi mechanic to get back to me.

I am most likely going to go for the London place, but I need to sort that out with work due to distances involved.

Think I paid about £180 for mine when it went.. But get it done sooner rather than later as when mine went, it took out the ABS sensor too (not too expensive, but more hassle and the dash lights up like a christmas tree and beeps like an 80's arcade)

I last had a wheel bearing done on the Boxster, cost me about £300, so the prices you've mentioned seem more than fair to me.
