Default Autopilot. What happens next..?

Just saw this article on the BBC. it's only brief but does highlight an issue with some people's perception of self driving cars and what they are capable of.

I read an interesting piece the other day about how these super-cruise systems have been developed to ignore stationary objects, since there are far more of them by the side of the road than there are moving objects in front of the car. So, they can detect a car slowing down, but in the few recent Tesla crashes, they simply ignored a stationary fire truck, crash barrier and police car, despite them being on a collision course. I think that says as much about the complacency of the manufacturers (well, basically Tesla) as it does about consumer perception.

There's been a lot of chatter on one of the US forums I'm on about the upcoming Tesla upgrade which supposedly promises level 3 self-driving, but it seems the current version isn't even level 2 based on how the cars are behaving at the moment.
