Don't think so.
I just used to ignore mine until "I" thought it was the correct time for a service, it only stays on briefly.

Yes it can-that is how it is being reset, will look up how tomorrow if nobody else does it before that. There is also some trick how to reset it with knobs on instrument panel on some cars- might try to search on goggle.

Sorry, I read it as if it can be reset with VAGCOM in hurry. On some cars it can be reset without and on others not. Like pointed out below.

Well this isn't definitive, but:

says:
How to reset Oil & Service light without a diagnostic tool
A8 1996-2006 Requires diagnostic tool.

You have 1996 car right?

1.Connect to dash in VCDS
2. Select adaption
3.Use channels
5- oil change service, in 1000km, normally 15 for 15 000km
6- distance till inspection service 1, enter as above but normally 30 for 30k km
7 - time in x10 days till inspection service 1, normally 36 for 360 days
8 - time for inspection service 2 in days x10, normally 73 for 730 days

The value in those channels will show distance/time remaining. Enter new value, test and save. This will be less then values above if service was done a while ago so enter appropriate value to as much distance/time remaining.

Please note that distance used is in km not miles in all cars so do not forget to convert values before entering.

'96 models can't be reset with the buttons.

Late '97 onwards can be reset with the buttons or suitable diagnostic equipment. There was a Euro bill that was passed circa '97, that all Euro vehicles MUST have the ability to have the service reset without using special tools, or visiting a dealership. In short, dealers weren't allowed to hold owners to ransome, clearing your service light for big bucks.

The same applied to early A4, you can't reset the service indicator with the buttons, while '97 onwards can be reset manually.

Interesting. My '96 4,2 QS wouldn't reset via the buttons, my '98 S8 would. I serviced it twice whilst I owned it, and cleared the service via the buttons.
