Default D4 3.0tdi Honest Opinions Please

im looking at a 2017 A8 D4 3.0tdi Sport Black Edition

please tell me any downsides / faults with this model you have experienced

i know the A8 has never handled that great (sport or not)

less than £25,000 buys a low mileage minter (good value really)

ive got my eye on one but just wanted to know what to look for in paticular regarding any issues

No longer fully aluminium. Check out the first video on the following page (the others include the R8 and TT):

Also, check out SSP456 in the D4 - Technical Info & Upgrades Sticky thread, from page 6.

Everybody will have the own experience but I'm glad to say that as far as I'm concerned mine is one of the best cars I've owned ,i drive it for work and do about 20 k a year and it does 40+ mpg and other than servicing ,brakes and front arms it has needed nothing (105k currently) I've had it 4 years past and have no intention of changing it any time soon

I had the impression they were rather reliable from what I read. No major problems. We haven't done a lot of mileage in our D4 3.0 TDI Sport yet but as far as I can say we have nothing to complain about. 👍

The D4 (face lift at least) was the first time I didn't feel the 3.0 was under powered, it felt very close to the 4.2tdi off the line. Suspect it is actually gearbox related, but wasn't shocked they dropped the bigger lump in the D5.

That said, I felt more "disconnected" in the d4 than the d3, or do fit that matter, but as a tool to deliver stress free miles it was awesome!

Compared to a D3, the D4 has a much smaller boot if that matters to you.
8 speed box is a huge improvement and as others have said 40+ mpg easily with the 3.0TDI.
If you’re planning on big mileage, I would be hesitant to recommend one though.
I had a 2004 D3 3.0TDI for many years and many miles with no big headaches.
The 2011 D4 3.0TDI that I replaced it with has given way more grief and and as an overall comment, I would consider the D3 much better built than a D4.
On my D4, I had an electric coolant pump and a leaking lower sump gasket covered when the car was in warranty.
Outside of warranty, I’ve had a leaking high pressure fuel pump and leaking middle sump which resulted in an engine out job and a hefty bill even though Audi covered a fair chunk with goodwill as these issues also appear on A6’s and A7’s with the same engine.
On more routine issues, I’ve had wheel bearings, suspension arms, paintwork blistering on panel edges and the front end air suspension is now dropping whenever the car is parked for 3-4 days.

Doesn't sound too good. What is or was the mileage on it?

186K Kms on it now but I had over 300K Kms on the D3 with far less trouble

My local Audi Dealer confirmed the paintwork was original with a paint gauge and submitted a warranty claim to Audi when the car was about 7 years old.
Audi offered to cover 30% of the cost to repair but the repair estimate was crazy as they insisted 2 doors would have to replaced and almost half the car would end up being repainted. I chose to live with it.
