Front Central Airvent
Can someone give me some quick pointers on how to remove the central air vent?
Actually, I need to remove the complete stereo cage - does anyone have a link to instructions? Thanks

Sold on. 1998 1.8T A4 Avant FWD. Ming Blue (there's a theme here), PEX for the 97 S8. And a list of non VAG going back 40 years before I saw the light.

FL and PF are the same for the cage, which makes them interchangeable conveniently.....
There are 2 screws up behind the center vents holding the cage in, and 2 screws at each side, but you'll need to remove the transmission tunnel covers to get to them. The screws all require a 4mm allen head. The tranmission tunnel covers are held on by a single crosshead screw in the middle of the carpetted section, although these are often missing as people struggle to refit them ! The drivers one is a little tougher as you have to remove the lower dash trims and left foot rest to get access.....The lower dash trim has two 4mm allen bolts up by the steering cowel at either side (pull off the u shaped piece of trim underneath the cowel), then there are 3 more bolts, 2 logically at the bottom of the trim, and 1 hidden up in cubby hole for the service book. These other bolts are likely 8mm hex drive. The foot rest is held down by 2 x 10mm nylon nuts and then can be a pain to get to, but a bit of patience will yeild results ! HTH.

All sorted - Carl very helpful. So conversion from FL single DIN to FL double DIN at the weekend!
Do I need to make tools to remove the vent? I'm guessing just pulling from the outside will cause damage?

In practice, levering gently with a screwdriver should work fine. The dashboard is very soft and wont mark, so take it easy and she should come out no probs...
