Default Anyone use a roofrack on their D2, I'm looking at a Thule system for my S8...

Wanted to see if any of you guys use a roof rack system on your D2's.

I'm looking at the Thule Aero Bar setup, over here in the US it is listed as the 480R mount, and the recommended bar length is 53" (135cm). The length of the bar seems pretty long so just thought I would reach out and see what others are running...


And when I'm asking are you guys aware of anyone that successfully used a Prorack Whispbar setup, over here in the US the D2 A8 is not shown on their fit guides...But I love the clean look of their designs...

Default I have originals...

I have original Audi bars (about £10 off fleabay......virtually unused bargain of the century!!) and they are absolutely superb on fit, finish, engineering (the front one is ever so slightly shorter than the back, they are single key lockable, come with their own mini-torque wrench to prevent overtightening (and presumably squashing the edge of the roof), excellent padding to avoid scratches, rubber insert along top edge of bars to stop loads slipping) etc etc.

Can't comment on the other makes, but if you can get hold of the Audi ones, you won't regret it. Solid as a rock.

Thanks for the tip Zip. I've just received a pair of unused Audi original [boxed] roof bars from fleabay for £29.00 plus postage.

See separate thread as I have just bought p/n 4EO 071 126 advertised as for all 8s not LWB but upon opening the box [received with glee today] the instructions [sealed envelope] indicate A8 03 on.

Just to follow up on my post I ended up going for the Thule setup as they fit well, and offer many different future fitment options...


Anyway I went with the Thule 480R feet, fit kit 1222 for our D2's, and the Aero 53" bars. Went with two 598 Criterium bike carriers, and finally the XADAPT8 Adapter Kit's, as well as locks...I also got a fit kit for our mkV GTi so that we can use the same rack on that car if needed, kit 1323...

Kit arrived and I fitted it on the car over the weekend. The fit kit 1222 came with instructions on how to set the bar lengths etc, it took a bit of time for me to setup as I've never used a roof rack before, but things went pretty smooth after I figured it out...

Under the doors are discrete markings to locate the feet


Attachment is relatively easy, once the bar position is complete. The hex bit makes it easy to tighten the mount.

Showing bars only, the 47" may work but the 53" was recommended length by Thule, anyway it gives the option to carry box + bikes later on.

Impressed with the quality of the kit, the aero bar is pretty clean looking.

Resurrecting this thread rather than start a new one - after use do the Thule kits leave any marks around the door frames? Looks like we're taking the s8 on hols after all so roof box needs to go on and although I've had my 2nd hand bars for at least a year I've never used them!

They were previously on an a8 but will try and check the measurements are all set up correctly. Can't say I've noticed any obvious markers for where the bars sit with the door open?
