Without wishing to sound like I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, wouldn't this be more attractive to a buyer if you got the code from the local Audi dealer? Looking at the ad dispassionately, it looks like the process of getting the code might not be quite as straightforward as it is portrayed, and that's bound to put buyers off.

If I was able to get a code I would but my dealer won't issue a code unless the stereo is fitted to a car.
It won't fit in the D3.

Reading the manual the code should be free from the dealer.

The code will be free as long as it was fitted to the car it came from, Audi will not provide a code for the unit without a valid VAT receipt as proof of ownership. The code should be in the front of the original radio manual.

I depends on the dealer, some try to charge the customer even so if they are entitled to claim half hours labour to headquarters for code retrieval. Some will ask for receipt others will not. Just tell them it was already in the car when you bought it and need a code because battery was disconnected if they ask for proof of purchase.

Scott, I honestly think you (or any buyer) will struggle to get the code without any starting point and especially without an A8 to put it in. Have you any idea where the unit came from initially?
Remember the security code is in the base section; the top half (GPS) is swappable as I'm sure you know.

I long ago gave up trying to protect such devices and write the code on them, as do many other people. Have you checked all over, including the hidden top face of the lower half?

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I have to agree with all of this, whenever I see the words 'easy fix' or 'code easily available' or similar, my first thought is "If it's that easy why haven't you done it?"

Technically, they only need the serial number of the unit to get the code.

However, speaking to almost any of the front line service dept folk wont get/care about this and will insist you bring the car in 'for diagnostics'. If you speak to someone in parts instead of service, you might find you initially speak to someone more technical who can understand better.

If you have a friendly Audi dealer and/or have a relationship with them, they will possibly help.

Alternitively, if you know the original supplying dealer of the car that the RNS-D came from, they might (a) have it on record or (b) be more willing to help. Or if you can find a dealer with sloppy record keeping, you might convince them it was their problem....

Its very do-able, but might need to ring round a few dealers mid day when its a bit quieter and they've got more time to listen properly....

but, at the end of the day, an RNS-D isn't worth that much I guess, so whether its worth your time and hassle to bother is another question entirely...

My local parts place did it for me for the stereo removed from my parents scrapped a4 - I had to produce some ID but nothing more. They took it out the back and hooked it up to retrieve the code

It's been sat in the loft for over year.
I can't remember where I got it from. I need it gone.
my local dealer is a pain.
unless you phone them up and go "I want to spend money!!" They don't care.

If you look in the RNS manual it states that the dealer will do this free. I can get a picture of it if you wanted.

But like others have said, each dealer is different and I can't be added to phone each dealer up trying to blag a code. Not when the new owner can fit it in their car and drive to a dealer and have better luck than me.

A mate just told me about a guy on eBay that can do it. I'll drop him a message and see what happens.

All the other units I got/had I wrote the code in the lower section, like HP said, it's the only section that needs the code and this one is empty.

I still got loads of spare parts if anyone is interested.
