Don't forget that BMW also do their version of 4WD xDrive. It is quite a bit different from quattro in that it still has engine quite a bit towards to rear and front wheels close to front. They do not put front diff in the gearbox but a separate front diff and another propshaft going from gearbox (transfer box )to front diff.

This is a picture for E30 325ix but others use similar layout.

Indeed they do and all 3 of my children run such BMWs. It's an eclectic mix - a boring 3.0D X5, a 440i Gran Coupe and an X5 5.0i. The last two in particular are PDQ!

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

440i is RWD only in UK market, until the launch of the new upcoming model anyway.

4-series xDrive in UK is available as 420i, 420d, 430d, 435d only, none of the straight 6 petrol engined 3 and 4s have ever been offered in the UK with xDrive until the very latest 3-series and soon to be released 4s

A new model 340i xDrive Touring is on my shortlist for next daily driver

I meant to mention that and did indeed forget

The 4wd E34 I've seen has the diff cast in to the sump and one of the output shafts goes through the sump right under the crankshaft. It has to have a steering box instead of a rack because of the room the 4wd system occupies. I think the 4wd Sierra had a similar arrangement.

Theoretically thats the ideal way to do a 4wd performance car (with an engine anyway) since you still have decent weight distribution but benefit from extra traction, but I suppose there will always be compromises somewhere.
