I was actually thinking of having it powder coated before I fit the new bushes. I have had mixed results with powder coatings in the past though so have been putting it off until I decided which way to go.

The POR-15 is a good option though. I could swill some around on the inside also. The hollow inside looks to have very little protection.

I realise this is off the point of this thread but does anyone know anything about getting these things dipped? Im thinking of some specialist company somewhere who can dip it to cover inside and out.

In all the pictures below the aftermarket (Lemförder) bushes are on the left and the genuine Audi bushes on the right.

What do you think of these Lemförder bushes folks? Part number is 4E0505171L, I think that's from a A8 D3. They look very similar to the genuine 4D0505171L bushes (on the right) we are now struggling to get hold of.

We might even be able to still get genuine ones.

Wow good find! Totally didn't occur to me to look for a D3 version. I will check availability with TPS tomorrow, but Lemforder are OE so we might as well just stick with those for £17 each.

Its a shame the H bush isn't available from Audi for the D3, otherwise Lemforder might have made those too.

I'm wondering now whether it would be possible to make an H by removing rubber from an L, since that appears to be the only difference. It wouldn't be difficult to mill out a pocket using a dremel-type tool, with the bush mounted in a rotating chuck. I might need to do some experimenting...

Just looking at this to see if it can be used for a H

Won't really know until I can get one in my hands.

Or this Lemförder in the pictures?

I'm gonna order a couple to take a closer look.

I'll keep you updated.

I suspect there's a lot of D3 parts that are equivalent or possibly even a little improved, especially where the only part number change is the prefix from 4D to 4E (like the D3 rear axle support bracket I used).

We need to start a cross-reference spreadsheet of equivalent parts.

I've ordered a couple of Lemförder 25881 01.

I'll do a comparison with the original 4D0505171H I have when they turn up.

I actually think 4D0505171H are still available at the moment but there can't be many left so we still need a replacement.

Hi all
In the image below the Lemförder 25881 01 (aka 8D0505171) is on the left. The bush on the right is the genuine Audi 4D0505171H.

The second image is a list of what vehicles these (8D0505171) bushes were fitted to (I think).

I have had a vernier gauge all over both bushes and the dimensions are all the same. The only, and obvious difference is that the Lemförder one has a mild steel casing as apposed to aluminium of the original. Funnily enough the Lemförder feels like better quality. I guess that's just the illusion of "weight = quality".

I don't see any reason why the Lemförder could not be used if the genuine ones become NLA but am happy to concede to anyone with more wisdom.

The mild steel casing pushed into an aluminium wishbone may create a galvanic corrosion issue but I seem to think Audi has done this before anyhow.

What do you think, a usable back up plan?

I've had one of these from an A6 on my desk for years, but never bothered to measure it because of the mixed metals issues. I really don't know how everything would react.

I wonder if using some sort of sealant on the bush flange as it's put in would prevent moisture getting in to the joint and therefore prevent corrosion?

I could be completely wrong with this but I think these bushes were fitted to the RS4 front end. Year 2000 ish and wasn't that an aluminium housing?

Still, would be a pain if you ever needed to replace them I guess. Aluminium ones seem to come out quite easily but I suspect that would not be the case after years of galvanic corrosion with the mild steel ones.

May get someone out of a bind at some point in the future though, maybe?
