Default Air Con whistling

Hi everyone

just wanted to see if anyone could help with this little prob. When i have the AC on i get a whistling noice coming into the car. I can only hear it with theAC on if i press the ECO button the sound stops ,which makes me think that it is related to the AC system.

Any tips on what it could be.I have had the AC system serviced and all seems fine with it ..just this whistling sound. it seems rev related as the car is coming to a stop you can hear it.

Thanks very much

I have that too. Its definitely rev related, most noticeable at low speeds and lately has been getting on my nerves. I am as interested in any suggestions as you are. I intended asking the Laird for ride in his to see whether he has it too! but his car was too clean when I turned up yesterday about another matter and I was dressed for gardening!

I think this has been discussed some time ago and, IIRC, it was the compressor. A re-gass might improve matters, otherwise it's expensive and difficult to fix, so turn the radio up!

Planned mods: auto-dimming rear view mirror, dash cam (as steamship's), fit the ski hatch, refit philips drl's (or maybe not - nope, definitely not - horrible botch!).

Had a re-gas last year at our sponsors. So I guess that the compressor, being belt driven, accounts for the rev-related nature but why does it sound likes its coming out the vents? Its a sort of low pitched whistling, woo-ing sound. The ghost in the machine?

Compressor or belt.

Put car on ramps with aircon on, get under car and listen. Compressor is not difficult to change if you know what you're doing. But whole system will need to be cleaned if you've got debris in it. If you don't do that debris will kill new compressor. In worst case scenario, if system is contaminated I'd change condensor, compressor, drier and expansion valve. £2000-3000. Still cheaper than gearbox or engine stuff.

Thanks all very good points

I was also thinking about the blower fan if that could give this kind of a sound as it wears out over time.

Sounds like bearing/clutch in the compressor. And you need to be careful with the dryer unit and bits in the system, that was the cause of me having 4 compressors in my PF D3 (thank fook for warranty!!)
