Mine has started doing the same too. Not sure how big a job it is to do and can't seem to find much online about changing them on D3's.

Thanks for the info.

It has behaved itself for the past week so I may leave it be for now until it gets worse!

Could be your crank position sensor. Same thing happened to mine, it wouldn't start when it was hot.

I don't think it's your starter motor. Check the earth strap from engine to chassis. Clean up both ends with a wire brush and reconnect. I changed both the alternator and starter motor on a D2 with the engine in (traumatizing) be for I used a volt meter at the battery and at the alternator an engine then chassis.

Guys, are you all experiencing this problem when starting the engine with a key or the start button???
If its only using start button then how about worn out switch??

And btw, replacing a starter looks like a **** job to me.

If you sometimes press the button several times and nothing happens, it can be a software problem. I rememebr the TSB and am sure it was discussed on here before but can't find it.

Mine does this sometimes (always when cold), and it records a starter blocked fault in 01-Engine. Only does it once a month or so, and others seem to have this odd behaviour to with the start button only. The starter begins to operate but then stops after a fraction of a second, press Stop and Start again and it fires normally in less than 2 seconds.

Ah, yes that's the one, it operates as though a fraction of a crank.
I used to get this frequently, but for some reason it has stopped for >year.
