Angry RNS-D losts its way

I think my sat nav has decided to sulk!

Because I looked at upgrading to RSN-e and I have been using TomTom for some time now, because quite frankly it way better.

So after lending my TomTom to the wife I fired up the SatNav and it told me I was about 50 miles from my location.

I have left it on for ages in GPS view screen and it shows 31 available by 0 tracking. I have entered the location manually and once it found 3 satellites but generally has given up.

Anyone had a similar problem?

As far as I know I have the latest s/w flash on it and the maps are 2007.

No doubt at all - It'll be the aerial feed at fault....

They are usually quite robust, but the aerial is fundamental to things working, and showing 0 satelites is a big tell tale sign that all is not spot on.

The aerial is on the boot lid, and has a short 3-4 foot cable that terminates near behind the CD changer. This was for the 'text only' satnavs that had a CD-rom reader in the boot, Audi decided to produce only one type of GPS aerial, with one length of lead...

So, in your case, being all graphical, the plug is connected directly into another coax wire that runs with the audio loom all the way to the back of the head unit, where it plugs in, like a giant extension lead.

So, you've two connections (behind CD changer, and behind Head unit) to check, and failing that maybe you have a duff aerial....

All is not lost though, you can pick standalone GPS aerials up for about a tenner and stuff it in the very corner of the dash on the passenger side, where it will work fine, or even just pick one up for troubleshooting to see if you plug it in and get any satelites.

Its worth noting that we have once seen this 'intermittency' on a Sat Nav where the RNS-D itself was faulty - the aerial connection on the PCB in the head unit was dodgy, which would be a strip it down and resolder job

Any more questions, pls ask
