At the price I paid I wasn't expecting genuine, but was expecting complete and unbroken.
It's an eBay business seller so I'll get my money back eventually or a good replacement. For now I've sent photos, detailed the issues and asked for a prompt replacement that is complete and unbroken; let's see how they respond. I need the car tonight for a few short journeys, today's weather is rubbish and it's running OK. Tomorrow I'll swap some bits around and hopefully make one acceptable unit from the two old ones I have.

The genuine part isn't all that great anyway in my experience. If you end up with a refund instead of a replacement, I've found the Meyle equivalent part to be reliable, and relatively inexpensive too.

The Chinese also seem to sell a "repair kit" identified as part number 06H103495XB and listed as "for VW GOLF Passat AUDI A4 A5 TT" not A8.
The diaphragm is in 2 parts, so I'm not 100% sure this will work, but how many designs of PCV of that era does VAG have? (possibly just the one!). Good find I think I'd probably still replace the whole thing, for that sake of another 10-15 quid (for as long as they're still available that is), but it's good to know new diaphragms are available too.

I've found another subtle but "challenging" difference between genuine and copies, in the diaphragm.
The edge of the main diaphragm is tucked into a slot in the "lid". The bottom half of the case has a fairly sharp edge that presses down into this slot to seal that edge very firmly. BUT the shape (cross-section) of the edge strip is subtly different; the copy is pretty much square (about 2mm each way) but the OEM is tapered down into the slot, overall it has maybe 25% less material there. This taper makes it easier to compress and seal; the copy is much more difficult to compress and makes it very difficult to snap the case shut. I tried fitting a copy diaphragm into the OEM case and just couldn't get it closed at all! In the end I worked carefully around the edge of the copy diaphragm with a craft knife and pared off a sliver of material. Probably a bit too much as the diaphragm didn't then fit securely. But it enabled me to close the case properly and it tests as airtight.

But they did and it arrived yesterday and actually looks OK.
If we get a fine day soon I'll work out what I can make from the now 4 PCV valves I have in various states of originality and repair. Probably 2 and some spare bits. The one on the car is definitely only temporary as it has a black (not orange ) non-OEM diaphragm that I pared down (somewhat excessively) to fit.

Buy from sources with some buyer protection and get them replaced. 2. When fitting push it very firmly into the channel all round; I used the handle end of a teaspoon. I had trimmed one old diaphragm but eventually found that wasn't needed as the problem was really #3! 3. Reuse the old moulding if at all possible, I did and eventually binned both the new ones. It might be possible to trim them but I didn't work out where. 4. You might need to trim very slightly to enlarge the holes that the clips engage into. Do a test fit and look carefully at the alignment. I also used a small hammer to tap the clips firmly shut. Final question for the experts. When swapping over this afternoon I had previously run the engine at idle long enough to warm up while doing other tasks, then left it briefly, though the engine was still quite warm. The PCV I took off had some condensation inside it, is that normal?
