You'll probably need VCDS to code in the new AMI anyway - WHEN you get it (not if ).

I fitted the AMI about four weeks back without any hitches. Took about ten minutes. I did not report it 'cos we had a couple of family problems. Main one was a funeral in Glasgow. The A8 was wonderful, three and a half hour drive each way leaving me fit to carry out the required duties without strain.
Had a play with the VCDS this morning, it worked straight away and I was able to register with Ross Tech. Did a complete fault code sweep but then had to pay my dues and take SHMBO shopping. Back home now, printed the report and will now look at it.
I am a bit short of time today, we have a two car job to Aintree Racecourse. A works Xmas do, carrying the top brass in the Chrysler 300C and our work A8. The work A8 is same as mine but 2007 and not quite as nice, newer yes, but my wheels look better!!!
I'll drop a note when I have perused the printout.

Hi All,
Sorry for the delay, very busy time at the moment.
So I am now on a sharp learning curve. I have yet to find an easy readable "How2DoIt". I have managed to do an "Auto Scan", save the file and look at it.
It makes sense, well sort of in a rough way. The fault codes that are showing sort of fit the history as I know it of my car.
Here is the first part :-
00-Steering Angle Sensor -- Status: OK 0000
01-Engine -- Status: Malfunction 0010
02-Auto Trans -- Status: OK 0000
03-ABS Brakes -- Status: OK 0000
05-Acc/Start Auth. -- Status: Malfunction 0010
06-Seat Mem. Pass -- Status: OK 0000
07-Control Head -- Status: OK 0000
08-Auto HVAC -- Status: Malfunction 0010
09-Cent. Elect. -- Status: Malfunction 0010
0E-Media Player 1 -- Status: Not registered 0001
15-Airbags -- Status: OK 0000
16-Steering wheel -- Status: OK 0000
17-Instruments -- Status: Malfunction 0010
18-Aux. Heat -- Status: OK 0000
19-CAN Gateway -- Status: Malfunction 0010
1E-Media Player 2 -- Status: OK 0000
25-Immobilizer -- Status: Malfunction 0010
34-Level Control -- Status: Malfunction 0010
36-Seat Mem. Drvr -- Status: OK 0000
37-Navigation -- Status: OK 0000
38-Roof Electronics -- Status: OK 0000
42-Door Elect, Driver -- Status: OK 0000
46-Central Conv. -- Status: Malfunction 0010
47-Sound System -- Status: Malfunction 0010
4F-Centr. Electr. II -- Status: OK 0000
52-Door Elect, Pass. -- Status: OK 0000
53-Parking Brake -- Status: Malfunction 0010
56-Radio -- Status: OK 0000
57-TV Tuner -- Status: OK 0000
61-Battery Regul. -- Status: Malfunction 0010
62-Door, Rear Left -- Status: OK 0000
67-Voice Control -- Status: OK 0000
72-Door, Rear Right -- Status: OK 0000
76-Park Assist -- Status: OK 0000
77-Telephone -- Status: OK 0000

I see that as 35 modules checked.
12 of them have a malfunction.
1 is Not registered.

Now we begin with the questions!!!
I have fitted an AMI and kept the CD changer. So I have two media players.
0E-Media Player 1 -- Status: Not registered 0001
1E-Media Player 2 -- Status: OK 0000

I thought that Player 1 was the CD changer and the AMI was Player 2. Now I am thinking I have it wrong. So how do I "register" Player 1? I suppose I need to change that "0001" to "0000", but how!!
I think that is enough for today, I'm tired after one of my handicapped kids decided to undress himself on the bus and turned rather physical after we dressed him again. Ahh!!! the joys of care. Good job his Mum understood.

For the AMI it sounds like you have hit the same issue mattylondon had when he fitted his. The car believes them both to be the same device, so you need to modify the wiring loom to get player 1 and 2 to register correctly.

Look at page 3 of this thread

Hi Ray & Mannyo,

I know his wiring is correct to the AMI and CD as we discussed this directly. When I installed mine correctly I remember doing some coding in the CAN Gateway, but for the life of me I can't find any documentation of what I did or where I found what to do. I was searching German and Polish forums heavily at that time. When I've time, which will be weekend, I'll take a look at my coding for you. In the meantime here are the extracts for my media players,

Exactly same as yours Matt apart from serial numbers.
They are both working correctly and I am now thinking I was correct to start with, Player 1 is CD player, & Player 2 is AMI. I was overthinking everything.

What is puzzling me is "0E-Media Player 1 -- Status: Not registered 0001"
I guess this means that the CD player has never been registered!!

There are a few more questions but they can wait till later.
I am planning on joining the Xmas meet near Warwick on the 28th. SWMBO will not be with me but my son will be.

Nothing goes to plan!
Sat down, all cosy for an evening researching VCDS.
SWMBO suddenly frowned at me, and I ended up driving her to the Trafford Centre (shopping mall) near Manchester.
N/s dipped headlight failed on the way so Saturday I'll be jacking the old lady up, (A8 not SWMBO) to check/change the bulb.
Anyway, after being dragged kicking and screaming around 5,000 shops we had a nice fish supper and arrived home at 22:00.
On Saturday I plan on clearing all the fault codes and start fresh.

Wow, It was freezing when I finally arrived home at silly o'clock this morning, my last 12 passengers were 55 minutes late, sat in the restaurant ignoring me, got a bit upset when I gave them back their £20 tip. Why do folk think they own you when they pay you for a job?
Rant over.

Replaced n/s dipped bulb, managed to get my hand in from the top but could not release the bulb holder. Went in with the wheel off, but what a job to release the wheel arch cover. Perhaps on a warm day it would be easier.

Cleared all the fault codes, went for a drive and did an "auto scan". Now I am down to 4 faults against the earlier 12. One remaining one is the CD Player "not registered", and I cannot clear the "Instruments Control Module" fault code dated "2013.02.08".

Now to research on the tinternet to see what can be found.

Here are the relevant readings.

I have the same parking brake fault as you, ie. Rear Brake pads worn. My brake pads are perfectly fine, confirmed when the rear bearing was replaced. I can only surmise that when my pads were changed the adaption process was not carried out, so the car believes the pads are low, but its getting a signal thats telling it otherwise.

I've never been able to clear that fault for 12 months, but the parking brake works perfectly fine.
