The RNS-Es do have a slightly different surround colour to the D2 plastics. Not enough for it to bother me, but I know some have used Kiwi boot polish to darken it, or you could try some gel style bumper black treatment?
To me the older RNS-E look to have black plastic, I don't remember noticing any difference when looking at Sergey's car.
Perhaps you mean the newer units which are clearly lighter and grey in colour as can be seen by ebay photos?
I can't imagine needing to boot polish an already black plastic, or for that matter anything in the car. Not exactly a fitting finish for a D2.
Perhaps matching the colour and airbrushing would be more acceptable.

Have a look at Ian's post 14 in this thread, the unit is pretty much identical in colour. Only maybe the finish is a tiny tiny shade more matt than RNS-D. That's not going to bother me.

I only mention it as I think Amar had done that with his car, back in the day.

Here's what mine looked like (earlier RNS-E unit) attached (apols that one is lopsided - it was the right way round when I uploaded it!)

The colour difference never bothered me, but it is there

Default CAN system fail + pin code problem after fitting the rns-e

Hello guys, I have recently tried to fit an RNS-E to replace existing RNS-D to the 2000 S8, all the adapters were there, tried to source CAN from both old TMC plug as well as the pins in the instrument cluster but the satnav is not receiving the correct signal and does not work correctly. With CAN wires connected, satnav will not let me in passed the pin code screen, pin code is correct, after I disconnect the CAN pin code works but then there is a typical CAN misinformation as not remembering the pin code, no illumination with lights on etc.

Also, not sure if related but maybe, I got these 2 error codes in the instrument cluster :
01336 Data Bus for Comfort System 80-00 - Single Wire Operation
01311 Data-Bus information No communication

Any valuable suggestions on how to get this working would be highly appreciated.

Thanks and happy new year to all the A8 forum users!

If its 2000 year then it might be an RNS-C rather than D like my D2 1999 is in which case you will need an adapter cable from Kufactec from memory

Is it a mk1 or mk2 RNS-e? The mk2 is coded to the VIN which it gets from the cluster I believe, so just the code isn't enough.

Hello everyone, I’m new here and just read the whole thread, phenomenal write up, makes you wanna do this kind of retrofits all day long. But would like to know if someone did this RNS-E fit to a pre-facelift A8 without even existing RNS-D (just radio/cassette)? Is it basically the same procedure or it is even more complicated?

Thank you.

Not familiar enough with the pre-facelift A8s but I think they use a 1-DIN format, whereas the facelift uses a 2-DIN format (basically the height of the unit), so fitting a RNS-E or even RNS-D might be more of a task.

Since you're new, pop along to the Introductions section and introduce yourself AND your car to the rest of the forum. Photos are good too.

If you're planning on staying around, update your profile with your location and the spec of the car as it helps further down the line when you're asking questions. That way you don't keep getting asked the spec or we automatically assume you're in the UK. Oh, and welcome.

My PF S8 had an RNS-C in it, same size as an RNS-D and very difficult to tell which is which (unless you know) Even had TV.
That said I'm not sure if there aren't less-than-subtle differences between PF and FL wiring/comms that would make RNS-E in a PF a real challenge.
The more I think about that car the more I realise how ahead of it's time it was for the 1990s!

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)

And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Was there a 1-DIN radio cassette prior to the RNS-C then, or am I just imaging it?

I think the vast majority of PF cars were single DIN - if they had nav at all it was the text based system that just used the DIS.

I suspect it's feasible to retrofit RNS-E into a PF (pretty sure it's been done) but given even that is now pretty ancient and older RNS-E units will most likely have failing/failed lasers I'd probably go for something more functional with a pop out screen if it was being installed to use, rather than to look OEM+
