It was October 2011 we got ours. Wife was abroad at her parents and I went around the UK to look at a few A6s but they were all clocked and/or dogs, I was looking at one and in the showroom was a black A8L for the same price. No comparison I fell in love as soon as I opened the door.

That's much how I got mine too ^ I walked in to Leeds Audi with a company car allowance looking for something with a big boot that could eat up miles. Drove out in an A8 instead of an A6

Completely the opposite for me. I decided I wanted an S8 pretty soon after they were launched, but couldn't afford one at the time and my company car allowance was nowhere near allowing me one on a lease.

But, being a long-term company car user (and having bought many of my own and colleagues ex-lease vehicles) I worked out that I could probably afford one that was dropping off a lease at around 3 years old.

Patience…..

Meanwhile I spotted a suitable numberplate for sale - S8 with my initials. grabbed it at a decent price (£200 or so IIRC).

A year or so later I started seriously looking for cars as the first ones were moving down into my price range.

And in early 2002 got the incredibly-specced S8 that I think had been a demo/press car at the UK launch and I then kept for nearly 13 years.
The owner before me had bought it as an "ex-Audi-management" model and driven it all over the continent in his sales management job.
(I did bump into him not so long ago at a car show, driving a very tuned-up RS6 Avant)

I did have a company car as well, at that time I think was a Rover 75 diesel automatic tourer (estate).... with a retune from Van Aaken that really made it fly!

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I got my first one because of a pi55ed conversation in a pub over the best, fastest bang for bucks motor I could get second hand.
I lost that argument (I wasn't backing the Audi), but won by conceding the argument and getting an S8. Icing on the cake, when it came to move onto the D3 I got a grand more than I paid for it.
