Default Emergency spare and MOT test

Hi folks,

I had my S8 MOT tested this week and failed first time because I had my spare fitted, which was 18" with same diameter tyre after a cracked rim resulted in flat tyre. Apparently the rules are wheels and tyres have to be identical across the same axle. Fitting 18" winter wheels solved problem. Retest within next working day at no further cost.

Lesson learned and hopefully knowledge passed on to this community.

I'll check with my MOT tester mate, who passed both my S8 and Focus recently.
Was the spare a different diameter rim? If not what exactly was the mismatch?

This is a stupid rule! It means that folks with staggered wheels like mike and myself could end up with a refusal if we take our spare wheel along on the MOT test - I keep a spare that is actually 18" with 245 45 18 tyre on it in the boot at all times because I run summer and winter wheels that are either 21" or 20" respectively and the spare happens to be a rolling radius smack bang in between the two sizes so that it will work without causing a quattro fault . . . Geez!!

I don't think the MOT checks the spare (or not that precisely); this was on the car in use if you reread the post.

I have separate summer and winter spares.

The spare wheel isn't part of the MoT unless it's fitted to the car - there's loads of cars with staggered wheels from the factory (incl my parents Lexus IS and myriad BMWs)

What you must have across EACH axle is tyres of the same size and type of construction

Section 4.1 of the MOT testers manual 'Tyres (structure)' states reason for rejection:

One tyre is of a different nominal size or aspect ratio to any other on the same axle.

A temporary use or space saver wheel and tyre fitted as a road wheel

The only thing mentioned regarding spare wheels is under section 4.2 (road wheels) which states that 'the vehicle presenter should be informed if a defect is noticed on a spare wheel' but doesn't actually form part of the inspection to check it if it's buried away under the boot floor. You might notice a defect on a wheel slung underneath when checking components from under the car

It raises an interesting question Adrian - so does all that mean that the minute you put your space saver spare on the car it is no longer compliant with the MOT because the wheels on the same axle are not matching thereby voiding the MOT and the insurance?

The MOT is ONLY a statement of the cars condition at the time of the test, so no.
If you ran on a space-saver spare for an excessive distance/time or inappropriate speed/conditions (vs the manufacturers recommendations) I'm sure the insurers would look at that very carefully if there was an incident.

AFAIK the tyres also have to have the same speed and load rating on the same axle not just size. The mot should also check the condition of spare wheel to ensure it hasn't got any defects as long as it's visible. I don't think testers can remove stuff to examine parts. This potentially could cause problems in the future on cars with full underbody covers fitted (like many are doing for efficiency reasons) because it'll be much harder to see corrosion. They're less likely to corrode being covered but as many of you know tin worm sneaks about!

Download the class 4 manual from here to find out exactly what they should be looking at - it's surprisingly limited in most areas

http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/

There had to be a change to UK law to allow space savers to be used when they were introduced.

Space savers are like run flats - they're designed to get you a minimal distance at a minimal speed, as an alternative to being stuck somewhere with no spare. The tread doesn't last long for obvious reasons and they run at about 65psi as a rule so are hard as nails!

A full size spare is always preferable, but obviously adds significant weight (and cost of an extra wheel and tyre vs a cheap space saver/can of foam!)

Load and speed index don't apply to the car test, but do for others

ETA - the browsable version of the manual is crap - you have to download the full version!
