Emergency spare
Hi guys,
The spare I use is an 18" rim of normal width ( it is a fat 5 as supplied with the car and is fitted withe a 245 45 18 full size tyre. It has the same rolling radius within 2% of the factory fit 20" rims with 265 35 20 tyres. My point is it seems legal to use as a spare yet does not meet MOT regulations. Cheers Richardracer

Correct - it's considered like a space saver due to the different size and profile of tyre

My MOT man said the tyre sizes would have to be the same size including width; he would also look for correct direction on a rotational tyre, sidewall condition/damage and tread depth.
Didn't say which of those would be an observation rather than a fail.

Hi There,
You do know that the spare wheel is only checked if it is there. Take the wheel out the boot, walk back through the door and they'd have to pass it. No legal requirement to have a spare wheel, though if you do it must be fit for purpose! Lee |

I always wait with the car when it's in for MOT and spare wheel has never been checked, the boot does not even get open for MOT. They cannot remove any parts at MOT so they don't really get to see spare unless it is on outside on some cars in which case it does need to be fit for purpose.
The original question however I believe was not for spare in the boot but if it is temporarily fitted to the car while it is in for MOT but is different size than other wheel on the same axle, like space saver spare wheel when you have puncture in which case it will be MOT failure and you need to fix and refit the regular wheel back on the car before it can pass MOT.

I've been told this by several different MOT testers that I know. If you think your spare won't pass the test, simply remove it before the test. |

As ainarssems posted before, the spare isn't part of the test unless it's fitted to the car. It can be flat and bald in the boot and it won't get a mention!
As I said before, if it's slung in a holder under the car and the tester can see a problem without removing the spare he can put it as an advisory, nothing more. The links I posted before to the actual MoT tester's manual are a really useful read so you can see precisely how little there is that's actually a failure
