Default What do most do next?

Touchy subject but, after the 8 goes to the big garage in the sky (I hope it's not listening!) what is the general pattern? Do most people put on the sensible shoes and go back to a little Ecobox? Or straight back to A8 land? It's something that's starting to play on my mind, I've had the old lady for a decade and I know it can't go on forever, its 21 after all. The paint has a few little bubbles, she's so old that the electrical gremlins (wipers, blowers) are repeat offenders and the gearbox keeps giving the occasional kick just to remind me it there. But it's been pretty much faultless, it always starts, it always gets me there quietly and in perfect comfort (with slightly battered wallet!) and I don't know many 21 year old daily drivers that live outside, have to do all the commutes, shopping, tip runs and everything in between yet with a wash and a polish could still look as box fresh. But I know we're getting close to our swan song. I know one day, one day too soon, it will leave. Something too big for me to fix will finally fell it. and where do I go from there? Financially it's a folly jumping into another, most are now diesel and I'll be dragged to hades over broken glass before I'd ever own a machine powered by that filthy liquor, and the D3 frankly looks flabby next to the svelte D2 (ha! take that D3 owners ) but......there's a reason I've owned this one for a decade and will genuinely grieve when it goes (it's outlasted jobs, relationships and several pets ) and you all know the reasons, otherwise you wouldn't be driving one either! So whilst I hope I don't need to know for sometime, eco box? Another? Something equally as massive? What normally happens after?

Buy another D2, obviously!

I'd look for a late FL with a few less miles and maybe some more toys. Make sure its up to date on its maintenance, and it should last plenty more years.

If its of interest, I will have a 2003 aqua blue 2.8q (formerly Dean's) for sale fairly soon. I bought it from Dean as a parts donor, but its too nice and I can't bring myself to kill it so it will live on

Which is exactly what I did.

The first one lasted well over a decade in my ownership, the second is over 5 years and going strong; just run in now at 100,000 miles.

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

It won't die!
The V8's go on and on and on provided they get their scheduled maintenance, use quality oils and they're timed correctly (!).
Corrosion isn't a major concern, provided you stay on top of any that crops up.
The only flaw is the gearbox. Budget for that and keep driving with a smile on your face knowing you didn't have to compromise like the other 95%!

well i must admit the D2 is a lovely car and always will be i did own 2 of them years ago and both had gearbox issues..
for me the D3 is far superior in every way but if its not your cup of tea thats ok too..
Budget is always an issue and prefered engine..
For me this would be on my list, add LPG and it would make a very interesting vehicle..

Look :-)

Wow - nearly 7K for a 2.8 V6. Nice condition though, and very low mileage.

This brings a smile to my face.
It's still noted in my signature.
(although I wouldn't forget that it's the Quattro Sport and not just a 2.8q

That car has been for sale a few times within the last year from my memory.
Or perhaps just for sale from one place but with different images and on a different platform(s).
It looks like it's in A1 condition but it is a bit low on spec. (smaller wheels, single DIN stereo, no parking sensors etc.). But if that's what you're after....
I mentioned it last year in this thread:
http://forum.a8parts.co.uk/showthread.php?t=13570

But getting another D2 is the coolest choice in my biased opinion.

I went form a B6 S4 Saloon, to a D2 S8....

Post D2 I switched to a B7 S4 Avant for a while, then into a C5 allroad.

I then returned to an 8, with a 2006 D3 which I ran for ~100k miles before moving to a D4 - both 4.2 TDI

No doubt in my mind, the A8 got more refined and more toys with each model - but also became more detached and a little bit less "fun". Hence I have a B6 S4 Cabriolet for "occasional weekends"
