Default Rear passenger glass replacement, insurance or DIY?

My rear passenger window has cracked. Mindless vandalism by some tw@t, today between 5pm and 7pm, they also tried the rear window as I can a see the impact and scratch line. There's also an impact on the side glass so a key or screwdriver was used. Few pics but a dirty car and it's dark now. As it's double glazed only the outside has cracked so it's still weather tight. I don't mind doing the job myself so I know it's done right. What are all your thoughts? Straight insurance claim? I last had a side window replaced on an A4 and they completely messed up the job that the glass would drop into the door

I suspect that took some force!

I have a new genuine OSR window (swb) in it’s box in my garage, open to offers if it is of use. That said, if you have glass cover I’d be tempted to just call auto glass?

Yeah, I must have really angered a neighbour

Insurance excess is £95

If I don't replace immediately, is there a chance the whole glass may go pop while driving and shatter?

Think you will be fine and secure, unless your neighbor finds a bigger hammer!

Two possible issues, if you wind the window down it may damage the outer rubber seal and I suspect it wont pass an MOT - but not sure if side windows are a testable item!?

RE your glass... I shall let you know if I do the replacement myself.

That kind of thing really annoys me, I'd likely end up in prison if I found someone doing that too mine.

Can't imagine your the type to annoy the neighbors either.

You've seen where I park and it's kind of informal bays between trees. Well the wife parked yesterday a bit over and left one tight space. Just coincidence probably? I mean people over park all the time. But it was where the lady with the Range Rover always parks. That's the only thing I can think of. Dash cam isn't set up for motion or impact while parked.

There are quite a few variations of glass (IR-reflective, acoustic etc.) so just be sure you get the same type. If you do it through insurance then, again, make sure the fitter turns up with the correct Audi glass and nothing less, whether it's side glass or rear screen.

I wouldn't roll the window down in the meantime but equally wouldn't be concerned about it getting any worse through everyday driving.

There was a video somewhere on Youtube of a guy going at a D3's side glass with a sledge hammer for a couple of minutes before it was bendy and broken up enough to be peeled back with Kevlar gloves so I can't imagine a big screwdriver or even a few blows from a DIY hammer would compromise the security of the car but it's sh!t when damage is left by some little **** trying and failing.
