Default A8, 95 4Sp, can you retro fit into a 97?

Just thinking out loud here, but my 97 Quattro is up on stands at the moment getting new fluid tomorrow after throwing Code 17114

Very minimal trans fluid came out, horrible condition (188kms) so hoping new fluid might work. If not, well .. we'll probably rebuild it.

That being said there is a possibility of acquiring an ABZ and 4sp Auto from a 95, the engine will be used for a project, but was wondering if the 4sp can be retro fitted, with TCU im assuming into the 97?

Or also will an auto from a 2000 A6 4.2Q go in without issues?

What's in the 97 now? Elsawin shows it could be 4 or 5 speed. Like for like is going to be easiest, but whether the TCU would be happy all depends on the gear ratios as it monitors input and output speed to make sure all is well (which is what throws the 17114 code when it isn't).

If you post up the gearbox code, and the 95 A8 / 00 A6 if you know them I can look up what the ratios are

Swapping from 5 speed to 4 speed will mean changing the rear diff, propshaft and presumably gearbox ECU. I think the instrument cluster is different too.

Probably doable if you have a complete donor.

5sp is currently in there.

Both the potential donor cars, A6 and 95 A8 appear to have been sold.

Still havent filled fluid into the A8 here yet, so no idea bout if its dead. but thankfully we are doing an engine conversion and wanting to use an Audi 4.2L. Cheaper for the client to buy a running car, than just an engine so I hope to score the auto cheap

Just dipping my toe into the water, what sort of money do you want to give for a whole car minus the front seats.

Probably less than it would cost to ship it from Australia

I was looking to sell not buy. You should fill in your location so i don't look stoopid in future

Sent a S8 grill out to that OZ, based on what that cost i would say it would be cheaper than a $850k gearbox rebuild

No, my mistake, I'm certain I was sleep deprived like I am now.

Actually shipping a car from UK to AU is a lot cheaper than USA to AU ... but in comparison to that, engines arent cheap to ship here

Anyways both of the potential donor cars have been sold, and my gearbox is still playing up ... dont know to play the waiting game until another one comes up for sales (which I can get our client to work with us on as he wants the motor for his car) ... or I just sell him my engine?

Anyone with knowledge on 24A acting strange, please feel free to look in my other thread
