But park locks the gearbox, so all it locks 4 wheels. God knows how you move a car stuck in park!

I think if you pick up both back wheels the centre diff would allow movement.
Just wang your jack in from behind and pump it up hard until you see her rear end lift, then just slide it back until you can reach round, should be able to open her up enough to get inside.

Dezzy... I reckon that technique would apply in several other situations too

What me? Ok maybe a little but only cos Adrian said

I think the centre diff would allow the car to move if you pick both rear wheels off the ground tho.

Yeah, we dismantled a duff gearbox one day out of interest and the Park mechanism is basically a dirty great big wedge that drops into place on the teeth of the final gears. Thats why you get a little play in Park as it rocks in between the two teeth its sat in.

I dare say brute force would get it moving, but OMG your box would be toast...

The center diff is built into the gearbox final drive area, and is quite neatly engineered (wishing I'd taken photos now) but pretty sure its engineered to give limited slip so it wont give enough to move the car with one wheel in the air.

Two wheels, one off each diff will get it moving, but really, what a carry on that would be.

The gearshift has a cable that runs right up to the ignition barrel. Its designed so that you cant get the gearstick out of Park unless the key is in and turned. I guess the recall must address some issue where the cable doesnt perform as required... !

*if* you got stuck in park, the two options would be to remove the steering wheel cowel, and unhook the cable from that end, or to remove the transmission tunnel side cover and remove it at that end. Either way, it will free the gearshift to enable movement and no crouching around on the floor, grunting, sweating or additional help required...

Of course, this now means I just documented how to get an A8 mobile if you want to nick it and dont have the keys... Doh...

Never mind, you still have to break in and deal with the alarm so we'll not worry too much eh?

I guess Mines failed then, as I can take it out of park with no key in it, and obviously no foot on the brake. Will get it booked in - never taken a car to the main dealer before! In fact, I've only ever take a car to a garage once before (besides tyres and MOTs.).

theres a little button on mercedes to take them out of park when the engines off. i witnessed a garage trying to bounce an E320 into the garage, until i showed them the button.

wonder if audis have the same?
