Default Audi A8 2.8 autobox grumble

My A8 autobox has started grumbling a little whilst in drive. It doesnt do it in neutral or in park. The box performs well so really it's more of a minor annoyance. Any ideas what it could be?

It's probably lack of oil and filter changes. I would drive it till the end and rebuild.

I think 100-150k is the sweet spot for catastrophic failure! However, there are those who are getting 200k from a gearbox. The one on my S8 went at 112k (and then again at 118k less than 3 years later and 3 months after I got it, do NOT go to Driver Transmissions in Birmingham)

I believe Audi were replacing them under warranty as early as 40k

Sadly they have all the same weak spots as all the others.

Does it grumble while moving, or while stationary as well? If moving it could be diff oil level. They are notorious for leaking out of the output flange seals, FWD versions even more so than quattro. The diff could be grumpy if it's low on oil.

If it grumbles while in drive but stationary then that could be the torque converter. Hard to tell without hearing it, and even then not easy to diagnose without taking it apart.
