Well, yes and no. If you want it to do anything really useful money has to change hands. Quite a bit of money....

2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Without the cable (£263) software is useless. Software needs cable. Yes, software is free to download, but cable is the brain of this kit, cable is also your license.

You can get the dodgy chinese ones, but..

1 - You can't ever connect to the internets/upgrade the dodgy copy of VCDS and if you do, you're straight onto '2'

2 - The cable usually breaks after a couple of uses.

It's called VCDS now as VW warned them they must not use VAG in the trade name. You can get it directly from the Rosstech site in US or Gendan the UK distributor.
The fake cables used to be officially 'supported' by a very old version of VCDS but I think that's all changed now.
Also, newer cars such as ours need HEX CAN cables whereas these fake ones are usually K-line only and so only work with some modules if any.

Having said that, many start off with the cheap cables and then get frustrated and spend the extra so if you just want a cheap introduction you could try one.

W8 is fine for proper VCDS versions.

If you pop along to ross-tech.com then you'll see all the wonderful things you can do with it.
