If you want spec, the 2.8 is not the place to be. The 3.7 will have loads more spec to start with.

The 4.2 should have lots more.

The S8 wont necessarily have more spec than a 4.2, but will have a purchase premium and higher fuel costs, along with a bit more cool.

Alloys can be changed easily after. Even the whole interior isn't that bad to change.

Getting the right car is important. A D2 with a broken gearbox is suddenly worth nothing. Really, nothing. The D2's with low mileage and / or a solid gearbox maintenance history are very thin on the ground. Getting a high miler and suddenly servicing it wont save the years of damage. Even the one I'm buying back im uber conscious I know that really, the gearbox is getting a bit of a lottery especially as the clocks have been changed at least once and the real mileage is a bit lost to history.

If you can afford it, the D3 loses some of the classic appeal, but in contrast to the D2 gains tech and there is no repetitive pattern of failure that causes their demise. They just keep going.

If you're hell bent on a D2 and colour is important, aim for any version you can get that's in good shape and worry about the alloys / interior / sport trim later if needs be.

Unfortunately you were really spoiled with your last one, and its going to make finding something similar pretty tricky.

If you want something insanely special, the pearl white S8 belonging to a8parts could likely be yours, but at a price

My D2 S8 will be up for sale again next month. I honestly believe the car is a good one, if a little rough around the edges cosmetically. 121 K miles.
It had the gearbox serviced back with filter in Jan 2015. Nothing in history confirms a rebuild has been done, but it's never clunked, dropped out or whined.
It's just had a oil change service and the transmission flange seal replaced as it started to leak on the way back from the magazine photoshoot. It's also had full service / cambelt, w/pump in last 2 years / 4000 miles. PM me if you are interested.

Budget is a major factor too - buying a really good D2 with lots of preventative care is likely to cost you a lot less in upkeep/repairs, but at the potential risk that you've invested enough in it financially that if you suffered a blown box it would leave you either with very little return on sale of a broken car, or the possibility that you swallow the repair bill and keep running it knowing the box is then all good.

There are folk on here who have gone the whole hog and replaced the box when it's died and have no intention of selling. Compared to the potential bills on a modern car even a new replacement box from Audi isn't that horrific next to the depreciation on a year old rep mobile. it's whether, should it happen, you can afford to cover the cost. If mine went I'd end up parking the car up while I saved the money to do the job properly, but like others I've gone for prevention rather than cure and have had 2 gearbox services done over the 5 years I've owned the car.

A cheap D3 has the potential to be a money pit if it's cheap because it's been abused. A higher mile but well maintained one probably holds slightly less fear factor.

A D2 4.2 is a must i think they are a great can and i think a 2.8 will leave you wanting more from the car ... better to have more horses under the bonnet and use them less than to have less horses and suddenly need the few you have to gallop

LPG on a 4.2 is the best Combo you can have, you will get a genuine 40mpg in terms of saving especially given the D2 4.2 Gearing V the S8 gearing .. and fantastic value for money now they have hit rock bottom and will deprecate no more " My opinion anyway "

You see, this is where I disagree.... They don't die easily. Not even at high mileage.

The D3's generally, just keep on going. Badly looked after ones have tired interiors, drinks spilled on the MMi's breaking the buttons, or the classic MMI screen that's been man handled and doesn't open/close due to broken cogs. Both are quite easy DIY fixes.

Electric park brake on the rear is a common, but easy replacement, and even the air suspension is generally very reliable and not that horrific if it fails.

The 4.0 Tdi is to be avoided, and the W12/S8 come with running costs you'd expect with those sort of engines but the 3.0 Tdi. 4.2Tdi and 4.2 petrol are pretty dam solid engines.

But most importantly, I can count on 1 hand the number of complete gearbox or engine failures I've seen.

So, I will say that if you're looking for more guaranteed longevity, the D3 is probably the better investment.

Driveability however is very different. The 6 speed bullet proof auto on the D3 is guaranteed a sport mode and the extra cogs give better mpg overall. The D3 chassis is noticeably stiffer in construction with less pieces and fewer welds. The D2 sports seats are awesome, but the D3 ones are better.

But the D3 does come with air suspension. And I don't like that. Its the main reason I wont go back to a D3 at the moment as it does numb the handling somewhat, even though it has lots of advantages for raising up over bumps / snow / rough terrain. A D2 with regular springs / shocks (that aren't tired) will likely handle far better.

It really depends on how much motorway vs B road action you're expecting...

Oh I do love the discussions between those in the know!

Ok, back to me... Have had a long look at the D2/ D3 choices and arguments. Reality check is that, personally, a D3 will never be twice the car at twice the price for me just now. So, if we go back to splodging roughly around the 2k mark Im entirely in the D2 market.

In honesty, its time to retreat and re-gather my thoughts. I'm starting to get to that horrible impulsive stage where a D2 3.7 with intergalactic miles, 5 shades of paint and 2 and a half wheels and a declared broken gearbox "could be sorted easy enough..."

I know where people are coming from with going for the s8. Totally. My barrier is that I was once fortunate enough to drive the a8 and the s8 Ian had and know that, at the time, I preferred the gentler ways of the a8 in terms of ride quality and gearing seeming less intrusive. I bought the a8. Damn selling that car.

Back to you folks please...

What do you want it for ?

Work / leisure / motorway / B road.

Keep for 6 months? 3 Years, Forever ?

At least we have a budget now

At 2K you're firmly in D2 territory, which means you're also in petrol land. Is MPG important ?

Have you considered going to see this one ?

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...t-2001/4781023

Ignoring the awful spray paint on the plastic engine parts (which are easily replaceable) its not a bad mileage, a 4.2, with Nav, sport, blinds, phone prep + probably others toys, full service history and local to you.

Given the god awful engine bay he'll doubtless be taking less for it as no one will be looking too hard at it.

@ £1500 leaves quite a few quid for tidying if it drives alright ?

LOl. I would have a car on my driveway by now if Id just answered the darn questions in the first place!!

Will be a 12k a year all rounder car.
Work commutes around 40 miles a day.

Likely scratching the itch for a year and then seeing where to go from there. When I find a car I love I tend to keep hold. That said Ive owned almost 60 cars in 20 years (have had 2 of them 6+ years each tho)

I enjoy a run across the moors with company so its nice to stretch its legs once in a while but I grew out of the 2am bored blasts when I sold my Legacy twin turbo (think dark, isolated, 4wd, running at full chat and misreading a bend ahead. I think I prayed around that bend!! )

MPG? It will be what it will be. Usually see av 23-25 out of my Saab turbos around the doors. Maybe 35 on a steady run. (certainly not going back to the Legacy / Supra single figure mpg tho!! )

In essence, I want the joy , comfort and presence of a nice a8 and don't care what colleagues or neighbours think of it. Its my treat to myself.

That linked a8 was the one that started this whole search all over again!! Missed it by a couple of hours. Sold well under the £1k mark too by all accounts.

I echoed your thoughts that underneath the tat could have been quite an honest car...
