(Different interface method though for an RNS-D)

I believe you can buy combination camera/light units to replace the standard D3 numberplate light.
Something like this, though this was for A6:
The replacement camera/light combo models only work for the USA bootlid design which uses a black plastic shroud around the numberplate lights.

Our euro (AUS/UK ETC) cars use a different bootlid where the trim panel is cast aluminium. The number plate lights are bespoke to the A8, and no camera will fit them.

I dremelled the number plate light holder to take the camera/number plate light(LED) combo.
We took the number plate light assembly of the car to do this and it took a couple of goes to make it fit squarely. Trial and error is the only way in the end to maximise the viewing angle.
One good thing is that I do not get bulb failure warnings with using LEDs. I wanted to replace the other light with a LED unit but think that will give me a blown bulb fault. I keep meaning to give it a try and see what happens. If it does fault I'll probably do what I have done with my sidelights, put a hidden filament bulb in parallel.

Post some pictures please. That's similar to what I did on my D2 though my camera is separate from the light.

Sorry Guys
I did all this in my early days with the 8 and did not take photos whilst doing it.
I have learnt now and all future mods will be properly documented.
Having said that I did mention it all in an earlier thread. I'll try and locate it later.

How is it best to route the wires from the boot to the front? I'm thinking takes the rear bench up and go along the door rubbers.

My apologies John.
Saturday and my job was cancelled with very little warning.
SWMBO decided that Plan B would come into effect, yours truly had no argument 'cos next job is not until Sunday.
I landed up having breakfast in Warrington IKEA, and doing the "follow my leader" around the store then M&S, and finally ASDA near you.
My brain finally woke up when we arrived back home. I should have contacted you for a chat.
Regards running cable front to rear (or the other way even) I lifted the door sill strips that hold the carpet down, shoved my wires between the carpet and the door sill.
Of course you will have to drop the glove box to get at the MMI ECU.

No worries Ray. I know what it's like. We're having mad weekends too, don't have a minute.
