I'd rather go with old style connector blocks or solder... Had problems with scotch locks falling off

I too was surprised to find I couldn't close the boot from the key or door switch.

I reverse park close to a building at work and reaching the button, thoughtfully placed in the middle of the boot lid (cheapskates could have put one on each side) can be difficult, and muck your clothes up on a wet day.

I'd like to get it working how it obviously should, but through the existing system, as surely there's better things to spend £120 on

You could always mod it to put a button inside the boot itself on either side. The buttons are fairly cheap and they just short to earth, so can be wired in parallel no problem.

I used to want this, but I'm guessing the reason Audi have never installed this is because you can't see whether you're going to jam something in the boot by being sat inside it. I'm quite happy in the knowledge that I'll never bend or break anything because something is fouling the boot

Not that I'd want this mod particularly, although I agree with Nick that putting the button in the middle is an ar5e to reach over to if you're backed up against something, but the boot closure does have full anti-trap like your windows, so its unlikely to hurt anyone, worst case scratch a bit of paint if you manage some metal on metal action.....
