Good idea Duffy.

I did a test rig with a CANBUS error free LED and an incandescent 501 in parallel.
I did not take any temperature readings but found after ten minutes I could hold the incandescent but not for long whilst the CANBUS LED actually burnt my finger just touching it.
Please let us know your results.
I was reading a couple of weeks back about a guy in the States who was playing with PTCs to solve this but seems to have gone quiet since. Hope his house did not burn down

I went the Trups route after chatting with Scott and am really pleased with the result.
I had two problems:-

1 The rear footwell lights would not come out for me but Trups did it rather quickly when I was visiting him.

2 The number plate light screws are solid so when the warmer possibly drier weather comes along I will get the drill out.

Trups did my front side lights with his little loom and they look fantastic.

Trups did me a special but there were other things in play that helped both of us.
I do reccomend his kit, especially the door/boot & footwell LEDs. I have not seen these anywhere else.

Sorry for the delay on this.
I used an IR thermometer today to measure the temp of the boot LED
Ambient was circa 20 degrees C, after circa 1 minute operation, the hottest part of the bulb circuitry peaked at 70 degrees, the holder itself was, at worst, warm to the touch and the hottest part of the bulb was the contact pads where it appeared to acting as a heat sink.

I didn't see anything to worry me unduly.

Hi Duffy,
Thanks for the detailed result, really interesting.
I have been playing with various LEDs but without any kind of thermometer, unless you count a slightly burnt finger tip.
Varying results, even with the same type supplied by the same supplier.
I think that my results might point to lack of proper research prior to mass production.
I have stopped messing about now because the ones supplied by Trups have fulfilled my needs.

Does anyone have any idea if the D4's LED's would fit the D3?

Would be interested to know if you could retrofit some OEM+ goodness into the D3...

Front
Pry the plastic diffuser from your side not the windscreen screen and it will pop open

Rear
Pry the entire unit starting from the sides and it will drop open.
