Default Audi CVT gearbox

I bought a ‘07 plate 2.7 TDI A6 C6 SE Avant on Saturday. It is the first time I have ever driven a CVT and I must say i’m quite taken with it.......although it does take a little getting used to, especially the ‘elastic band’ type effect upon a quick take-off!

Smooth isn’t the word, it is quite amazing! I’d be interested to read others experiences.

I read all the pros/cons scattered across the web and found one with full Audi Service history and regular gearbox fluid changes. It is also the later model with 7 rather than 6 plates. Apparently that makes a difference......

Anyway, like any 2nd hand car, you take a risk right!

I had an A6 Avant CVT a few years ago for a few months. It was actually a loaner from Audi and when it needed servicing they took it away and gave me a D3 4.0TDi for a few months more which was much better.
But it was quite nice to drive, though rather unnerving because the engine revs (diesel so obvious) were totally counter-intuitive.

The only problem I found was the take-off from stationary, something about the way the clutches engaged that I didn't like.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

So long as you keep up with those fluid changes, they should be a good gearbox.
If you don't they detonate at about 100,000miles (magic number for Audi that one )

I've only ever driven one CVT, a Mitsubishi Outlander my sister had for about a year. Very sluggish, and she hated it! Went to her Skoda Octavia VRS from that and still loves it despite the oil consumption issues...
I'm not a fan from the drivability standpoint, but they're supposedly very good for efficiency.

I bought a cheap tatty 3.0-litre petrol D3 with CVT box a couple of years ago, simply to poach the nice wheels from it.

It was OK, achieved about 35mpg from memory, and I remember the 'slingshot' effect which you talk of but I certainly wouldn't seek to own another and it just wasn't a particularly nice drive in the A8.

I had a 2 litre C5 A6 Avant with a “6 speed“ box fitted and I must say it was one of the smoothest autos I’ve driven.

I had heard lots of horror stories about them but I quite enjoyed it. The engine was a bit under powered for it and that’s the only reason I sold it. I’d have another as long as it had a torquier engine.
