From memory the wiring will be there. It is a two wires bundled inside a black plastic sheath terminated by a yellow round 2 pin plug.

It should be underneath the passenger side door sill trim.

It will need running up the passenger A pillar towards the roof.

Then, you need to install the solar roof, 2 contacts and two cables which will come down the A pillar and plug into it.

There is a relay holder in the footwell which has a bar across it connecting the battery to the fans permanently. Just replace this with a relay and all your work is done. Its so easy working on the early cars. You will have a fully wired towbar connection in there too

Thank you for that detailed information Ian I had no idea that the towbar electrics were included in the 'full' loom. You live and learn.

I've got a full kit in the garage for retrofitting MFSW.
It's a combination of A4 and A6 bits but it works fine on the RNS-c/d. I tested it OK the bench. As it doesn't use Canbus, it's relatively easy to retrofit if you got the correct steering wheel.

This will work fine in a facelift D2, but not on the OP 1996 car.

RNS-C uses canbus for talking directly to the multi function steering wheel controller, TV, phone and instrument cluster.

RNS-D uses a different canbus protocol, but passes it via the TMC gateway behind the cluster that converts it from blaupunkt canbus into Audi canbus, so the TMC gateway sits on the same infotainment bus as the phone, TV and cluster. This why when you retrofit an RNS-E, that talks proper audi canbus, you have to cut the TMC out of the loop.

In 1996, Prefacelift, the protocol is 3LB that is used for talking from the head unit to the instrument cluster, and its used only for displaying information, not for receiving any sort of control signals.

To my knowledge, there is no way to fit a MFSW to a 1996 car and have it do the audio controls.

Tiptronic, yes. Heated function, yes. Audio or phone, no.

Based on memory of 3+ years, I'm I don't think it needs Canbus.
It's old school signals, not Canbus.

I'll double check what pics and videos I have when I did it in the bench.

I can't remember using a tmc module as it was in the car.
