Default abs and exclamation mark

hi all, abs and exclamation mark lights turn on for a couple of seconds when i step on the gas pedal, happens often on the motorways.
they stay on for a couple of seconds, then switch off.
brakes seem to be alright.
had the car checked a couple of weeks ago and there were no probs.
any suggestions?

Dionysios,

Do you have ESP? If so, switch it off and try accelerating hard to see if you get the ABS light flashing again.
A scan with VCDS would also help.

Not sure if the S8 is the same, but on a friend's S4, the MAF caused this fault

Default abs !!!

A failing maf caused this on my s6....

If you have vag com...test the maf....

the test is.....with engine idling....rev the engine up to about 5000 rpm....there should be a proportional increase in the values of the maf reading...if it falls aways then you know the maf is faulty....

My S8 also does this, usually passing through about 90mph. Accmpanied by a second or two of roughish running, like a minor misfire.

What's the MAF?

It's the Mass Air Flow meter.. It's between the air filter and the engine.

90 mph? I assume that's on a track *ahem*

ermmm...........natch!

Tends to do it only once per outing, usually during the first transition from 'normal' to 'warp drive'.

Fitted new MAF as car running like a coo after being serviced. Prolly fitting the new air filter disturbed a faulty MAF.

Purring like a kitten now.

ABS and exclam mark no longer appear, so looks like MAF was the culprit all along.

Cost was £65. Easy to fit.
