Default D2 S8 raced on Carwow YT Channel

Oh dear....

The D2 seemed a bit slow to me...?

And how do we know that S3 wasn’t tuned?

I’m not convinced.

And Matt W’s mistake with the D2’s figures as well (why do they ALWAYS quote 340hp on FL?)

I saw that this morning and felt sad

It’s no surprise though as I had a little blast against one of those S3’s from the lights and it was pulling away from me.

Technology moves on though. The tech in S8 is over 20 years old now. I remember the feeling of my first S8 and the sensation of speed...it blew me away. Now I’m so used to it that I can’t remember the last time I jumped in it and thought wow this is quick. I still love it though. I love the way it drives and the road presence it commands.

A pointless and stupid test, the apparent purpose of which was to show up the S8, for reasons only known to the muppets who made it. Of course modern stuff is going to be faster than something 20 years old

What's next? A video on how a new X5M is faster than an E30 M3?

Suppose the combination of lighter car, MUCH faster gear changes and turbocharger all add up to conspire against the poor old girl

That S3 apparently sports just the one single modification of a resonator delete but you know what they say... in for a penny etc.

Anyway, the S8 looked AND sounded better

And I know which i'd prefer just as a daily driver too. It may not be the ultimate drag strip challenger, but it's fast, comfy and pure class!

As a man who swapped a stunning 2002 D2 S8 for a brand new 8V S3, I feel slightly qualified to add my comments.

Yes, the brand new small light hot hatch is faster and better handling - not really a great surprise. I like the tech in the little S3 and it is quite comfortable and twice as good on fuel.

But...... I wish I'd kept the D2 - so much more of a car. It always felt special. Every journey was an event! Strangers would comment. Even groups of kids in their Corsas would watch (and especially listen) as it burbled past them.

Sadly, I've fallen out with Audi, so will never go back (another problem of owning a new car that has an issue with it), but for me, the next thing will be older and more interesting again!

Long live the D2 S8

Brought back memories of my juddering brakes when he dropped the D2's anchor in the final test
