Thanks to all.

This is my software version from the head display in the car. How do I know if this is old or new? If its old how do I get the latest version and how do I install it.

Many thanks for all your help.

Aha! So now we know!

The first line ends "03.5.0 0324".

That's MMI level 0350 which dates from 2003 week 24.

Reasonably easily available versions are 51.5.0 & 55.7.0 [5150 & 5570], which date from 2008, but as your version is so old, you may need an intermediary level [1110 is often suggested] which you'll probably have to get from some kind soul who has an ISO image you can burn [or get burnt for you] to CD. I'm not aware of anyone who has an original 1110 CD.

Then you run the software update process by loading the CDs in the CD drive and using the MMI head to 'run it'.

By the way, you may not be able to access the 'green menu' but you can get probably get to the 'red menu' by holding Setup and Return for about 5 seconds.

This shows a list of MMI devices in the car [it's a list of all devices connected to the optical MOST BUS in the car] and it's also where you run the update CD from. [SWUPDATE option in lower right corner],

See incomplete sample below from my car; there's another page of devices not shown. It would probably be helpful to all the readers to know which devices you have in your car.

Hi Julian

Thank you for that. This is likely to be the root of my troubles.

Does anyone know where I can get the 1110 CD ISO that Julian suggests.

Thank you

I've done an intermediate update. Here's the version installed now. By your analogy this is version 3850 25th week of 2004. Is this the 1110 CD?

Got a bit of problem since the upgrade. Now when I switch the MMI on it goes to the screen for the SW upgrade looking for a CD ROM. Any thoughts?

No, this is not 1110; this is something strange

1) I've never seen this screen with a "U" in it. I've no idea what version this is - what did you do to get here? [I've never heard of an 'intermediate' update]

2) Can you do a full VCDS Autoscan of the car and attach the text file to a reply please?

BTW - this is what a 1110 screen looks like [found on the WWW].

I haven't got an answer for your strange circumstances as I've never seen anyone reporting that before. My [and most others updates] are straightforward and consequently most users of this forum are on 5570 which I would guess they they 'did' circa. 6 years ago. I would also guess that most are technically very competent, looked up the issues, 'bit the bullet' and got their code updated even if they didn't really 'need' it. I believe that the only consistent issue noted all that time ago was that the Bose amp had a tendency to go into CP, which needed an Audi dealer to fix.

In my own case, I've had my A8 since April 2008 and updated the MMI from 0890 to 5150, and then 5570 thirty minutes later, in Autumn 2009 after some issues with my 'proper' 2009 Navigation DVD, purchased in July.

I would suggest a lot of non-technical users ran their cars without ANY updates and these cars are now coming on the market second hand. Trouble is they are often 2003/2004 cars with very low level [below 0890] MMI versions. These are often tricky / impossible to update in one go and the intermediate CDs are no longer readily available. [That Audi should have updated them at the time of issue is something that there's little point in going into almost 10 years later]

So that's why you need to go to 1110 before trying 5150 and going on to 5570. The info about the process is non-existent and no-one's ever identified which versions need to go via 1110 and which can go straight to 5150. Some posts will say you always need to go to 1110; but my case, starting at 0890, shows that that isn't the right conclusion]

Julian

Thanks Julian

I thought I had been given 1110 and then followed the instructions. It seemed go according to the instructions, but clearly something went wrong given your answer. Im not sure where to go from here. I could try running the CD again I guess.

Ah; it's possible that 1110 is a two stage CD. You should ALWAYS rerun the SWUPDATE option until the process confirms there are no more updates.

Julian

Update: just found out that 1110 updates to U385 in Stage 1 and needs a second go to get to 1110. I'm surprised that no-one has ever mentioned this!
