S8 Cat

Horray for rattling exhausts

It was hard to pin down (even from underneath) at first. Even sounded as if it was the gearbox or engine (nooooooooo!)
Anyway after ignoring it (sorry carrying out extensive diagnostic tests) it was getting louder.
When i had the tyres put on I asked them to put it on the ramp so I could listen and low and behold it is the right (long) cat.
It is properly loose inside now and a good bang with a fist heard it rattling around inside like a good one. Sounds like a breeze block the size of a house brink rattling around inside the box.
When on the move it gives a very unusual sound. Obviously it is hard to hear on the move as the s8 is so well insulated but at rest with the door open and blipping the throttle it gives a very odd, non speed related rattling.
Anyway the search for a new on began

most people went - no, especially as it is an OBD model (weren't they all??)

I even phoned Audi after much halarity ho ho ho £1078 hahahahhahahahah

SO back to the net and there is an ebay seller offering it, the long right hand side (drivers in a rhd car)
but these guys offered to beat the price and deliver it next day for £334 and I will still find somewhere to trade in the old Kat which should release a few bucks more

I had the exact same problem last month. (1999 FL S8-right cat).

I too bought an aftermarket one (for £300).

A for Audi, up here in Glasgow, were asked to fit it for me.

Turned out that the company had sent the wrong cat up, but the real prob is that these aftermarket CATs are of highly variable quality. Mine was cack!

You just can't tell what is inside. It's the ultimate 'pig in a poke!'.

Anyway, A for Audi have a great reputation and they assured me that there was every chance that the new CAT would be rubbish. They said:

1. It weighs about half what it ought to.
2. It will work, after a fashion but for an unknown period of time.
3. It will likely be noisy.

Anyways, I bought the pukka Audi bit. It was about £800 but there was a £300 rebate for handing in the old one- so £500 all in. The garage trusted me to return the old one, so I never had to pay the full £800.

I got my money back for the non Audi CAT too.

When I got the bit, I could verify that claim no 1. above, was correct. I'll never know for sure about the other claims but I'm inclined to trust the A for Audi guys.

That stuff inside is expensive. So do you think mebbes the aftermarket people just put in the absolute minimum?

(btw. the allegedly duff CAT came from online automotive) eek!

On a previous S8 I replaced my rattly cats with two 200cpsi sports cats and used Wayne Schmidt's angle block connectors. The cats were only £400 for the pair fitted and worked perfectly.
