I like method #1

I guess the potential for leaks from disturbing the o-ring is quite high? Is it worth the risk?

I did this last year. Try to suck most of it out through filler plug. Removing the cover requires the removal of quite a few other things to access all the bolts and i dropped the sub-frame i think to get the lower ones - cant remember which ones. What is looks like with Final Drive removed:

I wouldn't bust your balls over it tbh, just remove what you can and top up, it will be fine. Very little contamination in there and the magnets do there job to attract any 'grindings'.
