Default Engine Management Light has come on

Hi all today started car and this engine light came on. I rang steve to ask him what it ment, he said check manual. Manual dont say much than take it to dealer. Can anyone here help. Is it safe to drive, anything to look for. Seems to be running fine, so its just had full service last week.
So im asking is it safe to drive?
If there is somthing that could cause this to come on, what?
Then at least i can ask garage to check the poss causes out.

Thanks Mel

Could be any one of a huge list. Really needs VCDS to read the codes.

If the light is on constantly on as apposed to flashing then it's a stored fault rather than a current one. If the light is on imediately after a fresh start upinstead of being off and coming on during a journey it is most likely an emissions based fault as these keep the EML on until the fault has been investigated, whereas a minor fault or anything non-emissions based, such as an electrical breakdown or failed component will store a fault but allow the light to go off.
If it is emissions based I can say it'll most likely be a Lamnda or fuelling fault. Caused either by failed Lambda probe (water ingress to loom or cheap fuel) or fuelling outside limits could be air leak from inlet, duff Air Mass Meter or split pipework

Thanks Ben. Took it to one of steves mates. He worked for VW yrs ago, When he left so did a big blue carrier computer, some sort of vagcom. He plugged it in came up with 2 codes he has said he had never seen before. Before you ask no he didnt write them down or print them out. He said no point to, as if after reset, light comes back on so will codes. Anyhow after reset no light.
So pleased. Worried all night it was going to cost big.
He said he cant reset service tho, as blue box doesnt know some of the audi systems.
So will be hunting down them VAGCOM's at Castle Combe.

thanks all Mel

Hi im back on this thread LOL
Coming home from work on sunday the engine management came back on, this time i have got the codes. All i know its somthing to do with air intake.

17831
17819
1754? as he scribbled it out saying it had nothing to do with it.
Think it must tho as before ADI all codes were cleared, so its new.

So what needs checking or doing.

Ben if you read this, could this be anything to do with that arm lever at front of engine?
The arm isnt seized, as ive just checked that, as you showed me where it was.

Mel,

Have a read of theses....

Here
Here

need final digit for last one.

First 2 seem to be secondary air related.

Thanks mike

Rang Steve he said last numberon the one code was a 9 so its 17549http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index...9/P1141/004417

As for the other 2 codes i need to find somthing common to both.

Steve has a feeling its this valve/arm at front centre of engine (anyone know its proper title/name?) if it is this is it big job to fix?

so if i got this right
code 17549 is the main fault as its common to both
causing
17831 and 17819 code
??????????
Might be female lol but getting there.

Default EML permanently on

Had the cats changed a few years ago and the EML has always been on since, as what was fitted were pattern parts and not genuine AUDI parts. Is there any way i can reset the light? The cats are fine, but the only way to reset permanently it is to take it to AUDI themselves..

You should be able to reset with a VagCom. I had non-satndard cats fitted (as have many here) and the EML was reset at the time of fitting. I'm sure someone will be along in your area soon to offer assistance - where are you?

You can reset with vcds but it will come back. You need to delete after cat lambdas from ecu software or you can bring lambda sensors out of exhaust flow a bit.
