Default Insurance for D4 4.2....

Only had my D4 4.2tdi since mid November.
My insurance is due on 20 Jan. I do have multi car insurance with admiral and last year, for a D3 4.2tdi and a BMW 645, they were very competitive!
Now, I'm struggling to insure this D4 for less than £500! I'm 50 yrs old FGS!
I've shopped away from admiral and looked at comparison sites and £430, with a high excess, seems to be the best I can get.
I have no convictions, points, etc.
Has anyone else experienced this 'hike' in price from a D3 to D4?
Why is there such a jump - both have the same engine and roughly the same construction?

Massive hike on my S5 (2011) to over £450. I’m 46 and live in a good postcode

Got to renew both cars around the same time as you. Currently with LV multicar after moving from Admiral following a non-fault claim on the S5 (which didn’t alter premium much when renewed last year)

I think the issue is more to do with the rebuild costs of newer models, headlights at over a grand each, loads of electronics behind the bumper and grill, etc.

Yes, the rebuild costs on newer, highly technical cars is an insurance issue.

Plus I wouldn't be surprised if all the driving aids newer cars have on them make us worse, less alert drivers

I suspect there's an age profile (for the car) issue that's kicking in, in terms of the value of the car as a commodity, and the cost of replacement parts, which makes a write-off more likely than a repair. Also as cars get cheaper, there 'may' be a tendency for them to be driven by people who take less care to avoid minor knocks

I suspect for our S5 they're dropping into sub-£10k territory as a reasonably rapid/affordable family wagon, plus with age on the vehicle the insurance industry will claim that the profile for claims for that vehicle are now better understood (based on claims history), so increases are justified.

Will see how I manage to get on as an aside, our 2015 Golf GTI is still sub-£250 and hasn't ramped up, which does suggest the car is the issue when it comes to the Audi.....

Interesting as my S8 just gets cheaper and cheaper to insure, maybe entering "cherished" territory?
The Volvo on the other hand they keep trying to charge more for, yet it has way more driver/safety aids.

Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

Has anyone ever managed to get "cherished" insurance for there D2 as yet? It would be really useful at the moment to be able to get Agreed valuation insurance.

S8 might just squeeze into Classic insurance this year as 20 years old seems to be the starting point. For it to qualify for Classic insurance you must have another car as your main vehicle and you'll have a limited mileage (negotiable at time of insuring)

I recently enquired about Classic insurance on a 1995 BMW 525 and my usual Classic insurance broker couldn't do it yet another broker quoted me on 1999 BMW 740 on a Classic policy.

Worth making a few phone calls to ask what's available
