No A8s, bit odd. I can't see why the 8's 3.0 and 4.2 TDi units would be any different?

Might be using a better system. Do the '8s use Piezo injectors perhaps?

The barrier is mainly down to cost when you're working with 4 cylinder engines - a few quid more in kit new isn't easy to get back on the sale price of a new car so they tend to look for savings more rigourously.

The 6 and 8 cylinder lumps can be made to run cleaner as they're less stressed and people expect to take a hit on fuel economy aka CO2

I read somewhere that one of the U.K. Testing authorities thinks there are "significant differences" between live in use data of users and test results on a large number of Mercedes models particularly so it's my bet that they will be next. Also the heads of technical of VW, Audi and Porsche have all been suspended on gardening leave. . . . . More to come soon methinks

just goes to demonstrate to what degree many major companies treat us all with distain , VAG always knew using this software from Bosch was illegal

I suspect that their attitude was the same as the banks ...we are too important to be allowed to go bust

and what purported to be the reason to have Bosch write this software anyway?

like many , I believe this to be the tip of the iceberg

The problem is perhaps that internal combustion engine technology simply isn't capable of meeting the emissions standards set by governments. Beyond capturing absolutely all of the emissions, there's simply no way we can reduce the pollution enough to meet the target.

What's the answer? I don't know. The electric car is still, in my opinion, something of a white elephant.
- The environmental impact of making and disposing of batteries is enormous (Even the Gigafactory will have to handle the toxic chemicals)
- You're just moving emissions from the tailpipe to the power station down the road
- The charging infrastructure will be expensive (both in terms of cash and emissions) to build, and most people don't have a driveway where they can park their car to charge up
- Governments are addicted to fuel duty
- If you want something Mondeo-sized, you have to get a Tesla Model-S which starts at £50,000

Blaming the car manufacturers alone is a bit disingenuous. We need and buy their cars. The oil companies sell us their fuel. Governments tax us on our car and fuel usage. Having a pop at VAG feels a bit like the Roman practice of decimation.
