Default Transition from d3 4.2tdi to D4 4.2tdi or Q7 4.2tdi...

Has anyone made the transition from a D3 to either a D4 4.2 OR a q7 4.2tdi?
I appreciate, 2 completely different cars, but, both are on my radar for different reasons.
I don't have a massive budget so it would be an 07 to 10 Q7 and it would need to have lots of extras to come close to the A8 luxury we, as A8 drivers, are used to.
Re the D4 - I do particularly want to get the 4.2 and age wise it would be no newer than a '2013, realistically.
Obviously, the A8 would be natural transition and offer much better value for money.
I just thought I'd test the water with people's thoughts.
I still love my D3 A8, with its relatively RARE spec, but, I have slightly itchy feet.
The main use for my A8 is currently the Lancashire to Heathrow journey twice a month.
Cheers chaps (and chapesses).

Q7 fuel drinker / tyre eater / bad handling lump , depending on year might be £550 tax disc,
no thankyou.

D4 4.2 tdi superb car , good fuel economy and reasonable road tax , even though i prefer the D3 in looks.
but
what a machine the D4 4.2 tdi is something else to drive (mapped it's mental)

there's a few about around 50k miles and 20 grand-ish i like this one
remember the newish ones do have adblue

I've done both.....

They are two different entities, as you have mentioned.

D4:

Pros: Fantastic tech, and build quality out of this world. Makes a D3 look very basic in comparison. Very comfortable ride, decent MPG

Cons: Early models had paint/corrosion issues, complex/unique tech means big bills. Dull and pretty average looking (imo). Impressive performance numbers on paper, but in reality not much fun to drive (compared to earlier a8's). Lose money like no other Audi I've ever seen.

I had one. That was enough for me.

Q7:

Pros: Big flexibility, 7 seats, huge boot, driving position, offroad clearance, based on A6 tech so cheap/easy to fix. Hold their value well. Really well.

Cons: Based on A6 tech, so less refined than an A8. Early models are top band tax disc. Fuel economy is in line with driving a large square brick around

I've had 6 old shape (2 x 3.0 Tdi, 3 x 4.2 Tdi, 1 x 4.2 FSi) , and just bought a new shape.......

Thanks for response.

These are my thoughts too, though I wasn't aware of the paint/corrosion issues?
Where on the car were these issues?
It is easy to poo poo the Q7 but they offer versatility and seem to hold value quite well. The higher tax - well at roughly £4 a week more, that's a pint of beer (or 2 in a weatherspoons!).
I think in my heart of hearts I'll end up going for the D4 and try and pick one that's a nice, dark colour with lots of goodies.
There's currently a '10 plate one on auto trader - the seller mentions it's the one reviewed by 5th gear and is on youtube- I checked out the video - a very high spec car, but, a tad over priced given the age and mileage.
Anyhoo- I've got a BMW to get rid of first! I know.......dirty word!
