S8 service
Well gave the old girl her 1st proper inspection since ownership and a few things on the list:
- New cam seals and rocker seals - n/s cam seal and rear o/s in particular. - Oil change. - Coolant leak from oil cooler, so new seal set going in there. - New sump gasket going in. - New timing belt kit and water pump, previous garage (5k ago with old owner) had used tipex and not correctly slackened off cam sprockets so tension not spread correct & existing belt was alarmingly slack in places & too tight in others - just glad i made it this far! - Rear diff flange oil seals as leaking both sides + top up - Gearbox filter fluid and gasket - Final drive flange seal & O ring + new fluid - Install Bilsteins allround and new mounts/rubber where needed - New front ARBs - New linkage arm for vacuum linkage arm on plenum chamber as one is broken (i am trying epoxy or wire as a start as not paying silly money for a replacement) but the fact its never worked properly during my ownership makes me excited to see the difference when sorted as effects performance quite a lot although not something flagged by VCDS unless you do a specific output test. Thats it for the moment so i should have my hands full.. Last edited by brasiliangringo; 31st May 2013 at 12:27 AM. |

Check that the belt tensioner damper has been changed, there should be manufacturing date if it's genuine Audi Item, if has not been changed get a new one. I did one where it has not been done and belt jumped over luckily not by much and no further damage. We first tried resetting timing with old tensioner. Set the timing, did 2 turns on cankshaft and timing is a bit off again, more on one side then the other and belt slack in places. Tried again, same thing. New tensioner damper sorted the issue

Good advice - i did actually check on of the wheels yesterday and it said 05'+ i have the invoice for 'one belt' only, fortunately i usually get a reasonable trade discount on timing kits from TPS so fingers crossed as more than i was planning on spending otherwise but there we go - V8 and all that !

On my S8 I only changed belt as all the rollers looked good, no play, running nice and smooth. As I have tools and I do the job myself I will change rollers if they wear out and start making noise or most likely just change the bearings to save the cost. But I have bought new damper since and it's on my to do list after seeing one fail on another car and causing belt to jump over.

Get yourself a metal oil cooler pipe, thats usually what causes the leak. The original pipe is plastic and degrades over time.

Cheers nice advice re the pipe but i dont have time to wait.
Spoke to Audi and they dont do a kit as such with all items individual and the price once added up is horrific so i really think ill just replace the cambelt, damper and tensioner wheel - the tension wheel you need to turn with the special tool.
