Belt or chain?
No I'm not talking 50 shades of grey but engines.
Seem to be finding conflicting answers, got a 4.2 v8 A8 in a pre face-lift d2 Can anyone confirm if it's a timing belt or chain Many thanks Lee |

Timing belt All D2s have belts, as do early D3s.
There are chains in the heads to link the two cams together but on a PF you don't need to worry about them To swap the belt needs special tools (obviously). I have the crank holding tool, but I don't have the cam alignment tools which go in the back of the heads. I'm not sure who has a set of these tbh: |

Ahh many thanks, just re checked what I was looking at and appears it was the 4.2 out of an a4.
Thanks for the help, any suggestions for interval on replacement? TIA |

S4 was the first chain driven v8, so that makes sense
No idea on interval I’m afraid...... but I am sure someone else will advise! |

80K or five years, whichever is soonest.
Always change the hydraulic damper / tensioner. I've seen more engines killed by failed tensioners than anything else. I do the water pump and thermostat every other belt. Genuine pumps are <£100 exchange from TPS. |
