Default Exclamation Mark under hard acceleration?

Chaps,

If I put my 2001 S8 into Tiptronic mode, and pull away hard in first from a standstill, I get an exclamation mark come up on the centre of the binnacle, which stays for a few seconds accompanied by several beeps. It then goes out, and normal service is resumed.

My car's been into a VAG specialist today to have some minor things taken care of, and had the codes read whilst there - nothing came up, not on gearbox or engine.

The car was taken out for a lengthy road test (circa 40 mins) and the exclamation symbol came up again under the same circumstances. But even after that, no codes could be found.

What could be the cause of this guys? Car is driving perfect to me, and the garage have given it a clean bill of health.

TIA

Ollie

Low brake fluid level that sets off level sensor as fluid moves towards rear under hard acceleration

Recall I had something similar caused by low coolant level, triggered in my case by a particularly long (almost 270 degree) bend that could be safely taken at fairly high speed.

what colour is the exclamation mark? red or yellow?
and does it appear on its own, in a broken or full circle or even in a flat tyre circle?

Could well be brake or handbrake related . . . so I would definitely get it checked

Thanks for the replies gents, just been out to the car. The brake fluid level is on the minimum, so could well be that. I shall nip down the local motor factors in the morning and pick some up. Not knowing what is in there currently, what would be a safe bet? Dot 4.1?

The coolant level is up to the max.

It's a full circle, in red. Brakes were all checked over today, no issues found.

Cheers,

Ollie

Should say on the lid of the reservoir what type to use - best not to mix types

Good point, cheers Adrian.

I'm way out of my comfort zone with this car, it's like being 18 and starting all over again (first "proper" Audi). If anyone wants to know anything about M3's let me know!

Virtually guarantee its the low Brake fluid.

When on minimum, and you pull away hard, it will show the (!) breifly, then the level settles and all is well.

I changed a brake caliper recently, and only had enough fluid handy to top it up to the minimum level. Ran it for a few days before getting round to the top up, and it did the (!) at any spirited take off.

Worth checking where the fluid went though......

Good to hear IT, thanks for the info.

There are no apparent leaks whatsoever, so I'm hoping that it wasn't topped up enough when last changed.

if it wasn't topped right up when last changed and the brakes were fairly new it may mean pads are now getting more worn too?

What side of London are you, by the way?
