OK so the usual suspects have been done (D2 and D3)...what about a D5? Or are you waiting for the S8 to come down in price a bit?

Does it have to be Audi?

Love the wife's Focus ST (I don't have a car since selling the TT) - I am still working in the office and have to drop my son off at the train station every morning so manage around 40 miles per day.

No, no need for Audi particularly.... I confess, the ST's did raise my interest at one point, but not sure if I could be seen to go 'backwards' to a Ford.... Brand snobbery getting the better of me there....

Well they're not making them any more, but the Volvo V40 T5 CC I have is effectively a Ford Focus with "class" and MUCH better tech. Several things Ford just don't offer at all.
(And did I mention, AWD, radar cruise from 0-Max, over 250bhp and 400NM after its Polestar tune, creamy-smooth 8-speed auto and faster than my S8 at UK legal speeds)

2003 D2 FL S8. Irish Green Pearl/Beige. Solar sunroof, auto-dim mirrors, electric rear seat functions, ski hatch retrofit; extended leather. Aftermarket DVB-T, reversing camera and full XCarlink (Bluetooth etc.).
2016 Volvo V40 T5 Cross Country (4WD) with ALL the toys including adaptive cruise etc. etc. Osmium Grey with Blonde/Charcoal leather interior. Polestar performance "optimisation". (A much rarer model than a D2 S8 by the way!) Oh, and a brand new engine at just under 30,000 miles on the factory one!
Finally: gone, but not forgotten.....
1998 D2 PF S8. AgateGrey/Platinum. Every option (I think) except electric rear seats, tiptronic steering wheel, ski hatch, towbar & dimming door mirrors.
e.g. Cruise control, NavPlus/TV, Bose, GSM, Xenons, Solar roof, Parking sensors, Alcantara/leather everywhere of course. (internal dimming mirror added later)
1998 (very early) Ford Focus 1.8 Zetec; ABS/TCS, Heated screen/mirrors, Aircon, Auto-dim mirror, Leather, Trip computer, Cruise control, OEM Ford SatNav with CD changer.
And before that a lot of Rover 800s, a few oddities, a lovely Triumph Dolomite 1850HL with Overdrive and way back in my schooldays an Austin Seven aka Mini 850!

I love German cars from 80s, 90s and early 2000s
D2 was the last of them.

I’d run my D2 pretty much forever if it wasn’t ruined in accident.

For post COVID low mileage world
find yourself a model that no longer depreciates,
service it well, and stick to it

4 star classics have good low mileage models.
Pay premium and just enjoy.
After what you lost on Tesla there’s nothing more to lose

We’ve had our S5 SB a long time, but it’s only just hit 74k miles. It used to need a litre of oil between annual oil changes, but when I had the thermostat done again recently I got David to fit the updated PCV valve (which also involves dialling home to Germany for an ECU update) which deals with oil consumption problems. Oil level hasn’t moved since, and it’s been our main car of choice over the last year. They don’t hide abuse terribly well, so a baggy one should be quite obvious

In terms of car ownership - we could’ve sold either car a year ago and survived just fine. The fixed costs of 2 cars atm does seem a bit daft when my wife’s been made redundant and I don’t commute by car anyway! Only the seemingly depressed used market has really put me off, and not wanting people to come to the house to view while I’m shielding

I think I have probably spent more on trickle chargers and electricity than I have on fuel in the last 12 months
