The tiny tank on my S5 is causing me issues at the moment! Drove back from the South West to West Sussex with about 2/3 of a tank remaining, which is debatable on range under normal circumstances for that journey. 'Luckily' the heavy traffic Sunday drive on the M4 meant my average speed was about 44mph and I switched off the aircon to help.

Made it home with 85 miles range remaining after already covering 244. That's some kind of record in that car!

Middle of last week I was getting fuel as needed without issue, but by Sunday I gave up after visiting 3 stations on my way through Bristol which were all out of petrol in both regular and super (1 had diesel). It's now in the garage until people stop behaving like muppets Tried ringing my 'local' Shell garage which is 7 miles away, and they won't answer the phone so I can't find out if they've got any and I'm not going to risk it!

Once everyone has filled their tank and gone nowhere the petrol stations will be awash with fuel and have no customers.

Probably well before next weekend. Sit it out if you have the option.

I get the impression there's no real shortage (or wasn't initially), maybe the odd local problem, just a media-driven panic buying frenzy. As ever the guilty parties are not accountable and accept no blame.

Environment Secretary is quoted as saying, and he's probably right:
Quote:
the lack of HGV drivers would have been "entirely manageable" if it were not for the reaction to media coverage about a limited number of forecourt closures.

My S8 is running just fine on it. No loss of power, although seems to be doing around 20mpg now compared to its usual 22. I should note that although it ought to have Super, the butt dyno says no difference between 95 and 98 in this one, probably because it only has 13K on the engine. Since ethanol resists knock, 95 E10 is better in a high compression engine than 95 E5 was and may be equivalent (in terms of knock) to 98/99 E5, albeit with higher fuel consumption. Engines with more miles on them do tend to respond better to higher octane though.

E10 is definitely not suitable for older classics, but we know that. They don't have compatible materials in the fuel system, but Audis from at least the mid 90s are just fine.

I ran a single top-up with E10 (about three quarter's of a tank) when that was all I could get, with no apparent ill effects. But I topped up on Shell V-Power as soon as it was available. As others have said, the 'good stuff' almost pays for itself with better mpg so that's my go-to fuel pretty much all the time.

My D2 S8 runs Ok on E10, no real problems and runs 20 odd MPG also.

Though been using LPG loads recently as its still 70p a litre so makes a fill up £40 which is much better. LPG does not give quite the power or responsiveness of Petrol but its great just to do the normal day to day driving on.

Interestingly my A2 is terrible on E10 for Fuel Economy. I lose 30 to 50 miles to a tank, and that's a 34 litre tank. Engine is just a simple 1.4 16v AUA petrol, drives OK with E10 just a serious MPG loss.

Hence gone back to E5 Super in it which its much happier.

I do wonder about the Economy factor.....And IF Super is now far more worthwhile???

Better octane and less Ethanol, for a few pence more a litre - I'm sure someone could do the maths and it wouldn't overly surprise me if Super actually came out on top here as being actually cheaper

It's going to vary a bit where you shop and what the difference is, but on that 2mpg, with say 10p difference

say 145 vs 155 and 4.5x for a gallon

20mpg at 145 x 4.5 = 652.5 > 32.6p a mile

22mpg at 155 x 4.5 = 697.5 > 31.7p a mile

15p and it's just a touch more expensive at 32.7p

Totally back of a fag packet maths there, but, as i guessed, Super is probably the better buy these days
