The replacement TC fixed it Did a couple of hundred miles this evening and the car is transformed! No more hunting or shuddering, nice crisp changes, and the DSP very quickly adapted to the Devon roads.

She is a joy to drive now

Who doesn't love a happy ending

Well done fixing it. I've pulled many cars to bits, but the auto boxes are a mystery to me. Fair play to IT with his early diagnosis of TC too.

TC is usually short for torque converter.

Yes, the torque converter Not a fun job but better than having to rebuild the gearbox.

I had the bad torque converter rebuilt last week - turns out the lockup clutch was completely worn out. I have a FE in this weekend with the exact same symptoms so the rebuilt converter is going in that.

Now here's the interesting thing - my gearbox had red ATF in it when I got it, when this converter died. Guess what's in the recently rebuilt FE's gearbox? Yup - red ATF.
Coincidence?

Depends on the ATF.
The genuine stuff is that yellow/greeny colour.

The Nulon and Royal branded ATFs I've used, which both meet LT 71141, are red. The Valvoline Maxlife synthetic which should also meet LT 71141 is red too.
So my transmission currently has red fluid in it!

I say coincidence, though I'd change it to be sure!

Any transmission rebuild place which put an off-spec fluid in one of these are a bunch of fools!
