Although the attached document addresses the 3.7 V8 and other V6 versions, the article on gearbox auxiliary ATF cooler set up (P 19 et seq) might be helpful (assuming that this arrangement was continued with the 4.2s which I dont know).
Ive also attached the gearbox filling procedure for info as well.

Thats an interesting read thanks very much but it's a different setup on the 4.2. Pipes go straight from the gearbox to the combined radiator / transmission fluid cooler. No auxiliary cooler in between.

But why no auxiliary cooler? It states that it was introduced on those models due to the higher power rating and the 4.2s were, obviously, more powerful again Was the combined cooler better able to do the cooling without needing a an Aux cooler?

The 3.7 and 2.7TT both use 5HP19 gearboxes whereas the 4.2 uses the 5HP24. The extra cooler is a bit of a hack to try and compensate for pushing the 5HP19 to / beyond its design limits. They really ought to have used the 5HP24 with those two engines, but presumably didn't because of cost and / or space.

Wow check it out
I know this isn't exactly how you're supposed to do this, but I (gently) ran 5 gallons through it before i dropped the pan. Wasn't fond of the idea of running half-dirty fluid through a new filter. Finally got the pan down, was expecting lota whisker shavings on my magnets but they're clean clean clean. Wonder why, maybe it's a newer trans. Will report results tomorrow.

Why is it so red? Are you using correct fluid?

The attached has the ZF recommendations for ATF. I havent checked it thoroughly but at first glance Im not sure that the Valvoline meets the requirements for the 5HP24.

Thanks, but LT 71141 is BMW's atf spec for that trans, for which this fluid has been actually certified, is that incorrect? This fluid has slightly higher vis. than the maxlife that people have been using with good sucess, not aware of any bad outcomes... Redline D4, a couple anecdotes. I've used the maxlife in the same trans in a mercedes, worked fine, that combined with the fact that I'm not superstitious by nature I'll let you all know tomorrow how it goes, planned to have it done tonight but the filter and meticulously cleaning and painting the pan, affixing the gasket, ate up a lot of time. Oh, and doing the same job getting the fluid clean with Pentosin, about 500$.
