I really don't understand the driven hard quandry. It's an S8....They were made to perform, they were made to do speed and get there quickly. You don't get an S8 and drive like a sunday school teacher.

Luckily they are still too pricey to be driven stupidly like a Ford Asbo though and actually abused.

Also they're Autos, you can't crash gear, and even if you hold with the paddles, it auto changes when out of range. You can't ride the clutch, god knows how you could do a handbreak turn and it's probably too big to do supermarket car park doughnuts.

Ooh, I like the online fixed price service idea. Thanks.

I had a quote from RAC, which is a VW/Audi specialist that gets rave reviews online. They quoted £320 for an interval service or £690 for a full service. The exhaust is an expensive job to return back and he seemed amused that I wanted to remove the Miltek.

Ulfilias, you're absolutely right, the S8 is not a car you expect to have been driven in granny-style and, yes, thankfully, the car is designed to take care of itself to some degree. I suppose, when I'm buying a used car, I always want to feel like the previous owners have driven it as gently as is reasonable and not thrashed it at every opportunity. You know, the kind of owner who would buy the car for bragging rights and only used the power occasionally. Strangely enough, we took this one to a supermarket car park and got some funny looks when I started driving round in circles to listen for bumps!

The V10 is a very different engine to most of the engines that ever went in the 8.

It was designed from the ground up to also provide the power plant for the lambo, and the RS6.

It has always seemed quite over engineered to me (in a good way) for a 'lowly' S8. I love its lightweight flywheel and ability to change revs so quickly. Everything about it says its not your run of the mill engine. It has always been the best drivers engine in the D3 by a long shot. Lightweight too so it doesn't screw up the handling.

In the D2 the S8 engine was a bit of a reworked head/ecu setup on the same block mated to lower gear ratios. It was good at the time, but the D3 S8 engine is different in so many better ways to the A8.

Given the ridiculous punishment the RS6's give it, with little if any issues, the S8 V10 should be one of the most reliable engines out there, even with some 'eager' driving.

But - The pas pumps do fail routinely, and they're driven off the chain. also the inlet manifold can cause issues later on. No amount of servicing or gentle driving (or lack of) is likely to prevent or cause those though.

When the car was in full lock, the steering hissed slightly. It was very minor and wasn't anything I haven't heard in other cars but seeing as you mention the PAS pump, should it be something (else) I'm concerned about?

Funnily enough I want a Miltek so if you are in the market for a swap drop me a PM as it will favour both of us

No issues with my system by the way!

Also, I just had a thought, I had my car inspected by the AA prior to purchase, cost a couple of hundred but they went through everything and produced a 24 page report, certainly put my mind at ease

You wouldn't believe the stuff they look at

I concur, its incredibly detailed. From the operation of switches, to full underside inspection, to paint thickness to market valuation + road test, the works. Very thorough. I was on the receiving end on an inspection and was very impressed

You know, that sounds like a pretty good idea. I think I get a discount on them too, being an AA member.

I'll look into it. Thanks for the tip!

Not sure this makes any sense whatsoever to me, I see this nonsense a lot on other forums and always gives me a laugh.

Anyway good luck with your search
