In a geeky way, this is getting quite interesting.... There is no documented D3 with any engine config in ETKA that I can find, I've been through all the petrols and diesels, and all should have 2 fans.....

Hope you get it sorted...

Dont have the old fan to check, it was quite smashed.

Audi have the car still at the moment. so i cant check anything

(doing 2 track rods complete, couple suspension arms, and ACC reset, along with front disks + pads, aircon regas, valve intake link things that have snapped)

I will print off the diagram you gave me, i also have an auto electrician that i know going to look at it when i get it back.

where are you based to perhaps have a look with me?

all 3 cars that A8 parts got in were twin fans. they have never seen a single fan.

now checking with audi, it deffo shows my fan as a single unit thats larger than either of the twin fans.

just to check with A8 parts they looked at a fan and cowling for me.

2 fans plug into a unit. the wiring loom plugs into this unit with a single plug.

so the plugs are the same, but maybe certain wires have different functions.

can anyone get the wiring diagrams for the twin fans + single fan unit?

The diagram I posted earlier is the only one on Elsa but i will have a look through v6 engines just in case. If you look at the notes there are some areas marked with # and * but in the diagram * appears as small squares on second fan V177 circuit making differences between hot climate and not hot and I can only assume that some just do not have second fan but wiring for fan no1 V7 is the same for all even if fans are different. Based on this I would say that at least 1 fan should be working without modifications.

If the old fan was jammed in accident and it was switched on it could have been drawing to much current and blown the fuse or if there was just 1 60A fuse for single fan instead of 2 it could have been blown when both fans tried to start.

I am in Rushden NN10

i would have thought audi checked the fuse?

if its drawing more current because its 2fans, and the fuse keeps blowing, am i right in thinking its safe to up the fuse size?

it just so happens i should be going nottingham on 2nd sept, so if i have the car back by then, il give you a heads up.

Did you tell them you put different fan setup, if you did if I would not be surprised if they did not check anything physically on car and just saw opportunity to sell you something.

I would not go higher then 60A but if there is just one fuse I would put both in, they are just like metal plate not like regular fuses I will sort out pdf of them tomorrow.

I think I am on holiday on 2nd in fact 29/08-06/09, not like gone away just not going to work so that's fine by me. If I did not have car back by then I would kick somebody's a##. I do not make any promises but I will have a look and I do have oscilloscope if I can dig it out so I can check PWM signal as well if you need let me know if you are coming and I will give you full address details, I am pretty much every day on here but you can PM so that I get it on e-mail as well.

told audi full story re fans

they are not after making money out of me as i know the guy in service, and hes just trying to help.

they cant really spend too much time investigating it, so are telling me it needs a single fan.

they have a lot to do on the car, and i mess them around more than they mess me around lol so im very patient with them when it takes longer than it should.

once i have it back i can check fans, but the engine light is on and its because of the fans.

something about no response from fan control unit etc.

Possible that the old fan when it was broken caused an over-current condition by jamming and fried the control module.

possible, the fan was jammed and wouldnt spin, however, the control module/unit is on the cowling or the back of the fans, its inbuilt isnt it?

when i purchased the twin fan unit + cowling it comes with the control units.

they are built into the fans/cowling IIRC

It is possible but I would expect fuses to blow before control unit fries and he should have gotten new control unit with the fans.

Was under the bonnet at the weekend checking all the fluid levels, etc and was slightly surprised to find, that I too am the prooud owner of a single-fan 4.2 D3

The fan is on the passenger side in front of the air-con compressor and the other side has flaps which look like they open at speed.
