TBH though, I've not re-advertised as I now intend to keep it for the summer.

Always open to sensible offers, but no longer actively selling

How many blokes have you seen driving an MG TF convertible?

You want an MTEC 2 E30 325I convertible like this, trust me - these are silly fun.

Or an E36 M3, like this. It has the handling (Audi convertible won't have this) power and that fantastic straight six BMW 'M Power' engine.

The E30 is my favourite. I was lucky enough to own a 1990 E30 M3 Cabrio in Macau Blue, for 18 months. Superb handling in stock form, to rival (and better) even modified AWD Audi.

The first generation Audi Cabrio FWD B4 won't be anywhere near as good, neither will the later B6/7 A4-based cars, even with the benefit of quattro. The Beemers are hard to beat, and yeah, I know this is an Audi forum, but BMW has always had the edge.

Your description would suggest you're referring to the first generation Audi Cabriolet, based upon the B3/4 Audi 80. Is this the case?

Yeah it must be the 80 based B3/4 version as the the B6/7 four pots were turbo'd if I remeber correctly. See, I can see major problems with that.

Front wheel drive
1.8 NA engine in a heavy convertible body (anyone know the 0-60)? Bet it's slow

BMW do drive a lot better then the Audi equivalent that's why the Audi has to excel in other areas to be considered a viable rival, a front wheel drive gutless heavy old 80 convertible isn't. Had they put an S2 engine in there, then I'd consider the B3/4, quattro and power etc.

Stick with the Beemers on this one, I don't know anything about Jap cars. But have heard the MR2 and MX5 are good fun. But you have the BMW diagnostic gear, I know decent OEM BMW parts suppliers so best sticking with zee Germans.

In that case, the wheels you have won't fit.

B3/B4 Audi (exc. S2/RS2) were all 4 x 108 PCD. And I wouldn't go any larger than 8,0" x 17". The wheel arches (particularly the rears) are pretty tight.

For £2,000 I would go for a 1998/99 E36 BMW 318i Cabrio. The ride will reward you better than the slow, ponderous and rather under-powered Audi Cabrio 1,8.

Audi - 1,8 20V 125 bhp.
BMW - 1,8 16V 140 bhp.

That 1,8 20V motor needs to be beat on real good to extract the meagre performance, it's peaky as hell in the much lighter Audi A3 1,8, I can't even begin to imagine how slow (and thirsty) it'll be in the heavy B3/4 Cabrio.

The engine to go for is the V6, there's plenty for less than £2k with less than 100k miles. Some will have the power hood and 17" boleros which suit it down to the ground.
